Wesenufer is considered an idyllic market town on the Danube in the romantic Upper Danube Valley. There are several ways to plan your trip: the market-town loop starting and ending at the market square, hiking and walking trails, insights into Zillen boatbuilding, and time by the Danube. Views and art nearby round out the options. You can tailor your itinerary to your interests, balancing a walk around town, outdoor activity, scenery and culture.
Trails and outdoor activities
The Wesenufer market-town loop No. 73 starts and ends at Wesenufer Market Square, right by the church. Its shared starting and finishing point makes it easy to follow as a walk around town and gives the route a clear reference point. The Danube Resonance Trail Waldkirchen–Wesenufer is just under 13 kilometres long. Its exercises are located on the paths or immediately beside them. The route’s length and the location of the exercises provide two concrete planning details: the distance covered and its focus on movement.
The “Bründlweg” hiking trail No. 89 runs from Wesenufer to Waldkirchen; the Bräu Chapel is along the way. It adds a specific landmark to the route information. Wesenufer is also a starting point for e-bike tours into the Danube hinterland. Well-marked routes such as the R1.03 Donauengtal Loop invite you to explore the hinterland by e-bike.
Views and art in the surrounding area
Nearby, the Vier-Viertel-Blick offers a 360-degree panoramic view across the Innviertel, Mühlviertel, Hausruckviertel and Traunviertel regions of Upper Austria. It is located directly on the hiking trail to the Kleines Kößlbachtal nature reserve. The Vier-Viertel-Blick focuses on the panorama, while the nearby sculpture park brings together art and views of the Danube.
The Atelier Fahrner Sculpture Park is also nearby, on the “Donaublick” running and walking route. It features metal sculptures and offers views of the Danube. The two destinations therefore have different highlights: the sculpture park centres on outdoor art and river views, while the Vier-Viertel-Blick offers a panorama across Upper Austria’s four regions.
Danube waterfront and Zillen boatbuilding
Wesenufer’s Danube beach provides natural access to the river and opportunities to relax, sunbathe and cool off. If you plan to visit the beach, check the latest information about its operation before your trip.
The permanent exhibition “DIE ZILLE” showcases the role of Zillen and wooden boatbuilding in the past and present. Models of wooden boats and the tools used to build them provide tangible examples of the subject. Local history also has a dateable reference: Wesenufer was first mentioned in a document in 1310 under the name “Wesenurfar”.
Events and accommodation
The events calendar may also play a part in choosing when to travel. The Wesenufer Music Association’s carnival session has been held every two years since 1994 and is a regular fixture in the calendar. Check whether a session falls on your planned travel dates.
The Wesenufer Hotel’s kitchen uses regional and seasonal produce—a specific accommodation-related detail for travellers who value these aspects when choosing where to stay.
