Sankt Aegidi offers views of the Alpine foothills, the Danube Valley and the hilly landscape of the MĂĽhlviertel. Around St. Aegidi, hiking and riding trails pass through romantically wild stream valleys, flower-filled meadows and quiet forest paths. While the views draw your gaze across expansive landscapes, the trails themselves focus on valleys, meadows and forests. If you are planning a stay focused on nature and activity, these features can help guide your choice of Sankt Aegidi as a place to stay.

Hiking trails with different landmarks

Sankt Aegidi has 17 marked hiking trails, designed together with Engelhartszell and covering more than 150 kilometers in total. The Donausteig circuit is a loop trail that passes several viewpoints and sights. The Pankrazius hike starts at St. Aegidi parish church. The Kösslbach hike goes around the nature reserve of the Kleine Kößlbach stream; the Aegidinger circular hike offers a magnificent panorama. These hikes therefore differ in their specific landmarks: a loop trail, a start at the church, a connection to the nature reserve or a panorama. If hiking is your priority, you can choose according to the feature that matters most to you on this trip.

Cycling and getting there

For cycling, the Donauengtal loop runs from Sankt Aegidi across the idyllic high plateau, followed by a 4.5-kilometer scenic descent. The Sauwald Panoramic Road also passes through Sankt Aegidi. The Donauengtal loop is therefore a cycling route with a specific distance and a descent; the panoramic road is another option that runs through the town. Sankt Aegidi can be reached by road by car or bus. If you are traveling by bus, check the timetable in advance for your travel date. Conditions on the Pankrazius hike and the Donauengtal loop may change, so check for current information before setting out.

Churches, chapels and Burgstall

The Catholic parish church of St. Aegidius in St. Aegidi is protected as a historic monument by ordinance and is also the starting point of the Pankrazius hike. The St. Pankratius Chapel is also protected as a historic monument by ordinance. Access to the Schmerzhaftenmutter Chapel is through the owner’s courtyard; because it is private property, confirm locally before visiting. The ruins of Burgstall have overlooked the Kößlbach Valley for more than 800 years. Culture enthusiasts will find several points of interest: protected religious buildings, a chapel with courtyard access that needs to be confirmed, and ruins with a clear connection to the valley.

Trout Circus and Mill Museum

At the Trout Circus, tame trout perform tricks; there is also a mill museum with quaint exhibits. The combination of these two attractions offers a distinct focus alongside the landscape, hiking trails and historic monuments: here, the trout’s tricks and the mill exhibition take center stage.
