Liebenau offers several distinct reasons to visit: Tannermoor, hiking and mountain biking trails, and seasonal winter sports. The time of year is especially important if you want to fish, use the ski lift or go cross-country skiing.

Tannermoor and Trails

The Tannermoor nature reserve is located in the market town of Liebenau and covers 124.2425 hectares. It is home to numerous rare plant and animal species. The area was designated a nature reserve in 1983 and a European protected area in 2021. The Tannermoor trail network includes the RUBNERtrail, which is suitable for pushchairs, and the approximately six-kilometre-long TANNERtrail. The TANNERtrail features a moor foot bath; the granite knolls at LehrmĂĽller-Mauer offer panoramic views. The information about pushchair access and trail length helps you choose between the two routes according to your planning needs.

Two other routes have different focuses. The Wachtsteinweg leads from the town centre to Wachtstein and on towards TabormĂĽhle, through meadows and forests. The Kampursprungweg passes through GlashĂĽtten and Hirschau to the source of the Kamp, then returns to Liebenau via Schanz. The Wachtsteinweg is described through named stops and landscapes, while the Kampursprungweg focuses on the sequence of places along the route to the source. No route length or walking time is specified for these trails.

Cycling and Fishing

Mountain bikers will find a well-signposted trail network in Liebenau, connected to the mountain biking networks of the other Almgemeinden and the neighbouring Waldviertel region. For anyone planning a cycling trip, this is a different option from the hiking trails described above: the focus here is on the trail network and its regional connections.

Fishing is possible at Rubenerteich from 1 May to 31 October. Check the dates before your trip. The MOOR-TREFF kiosk at Rubenerteich is staffed approximately from May to October. Outside opening hours or in bad weather, drinks and snacks are available from a vending machine. This gives you a better sense of the seasonal visit to the pond without implying specific daily opening hours.

Winter Sports in Liebenau

In winter, cross-country skiing and downhill skiing are options in their own right alongside the trails available in the warmer months. The ski lift on Pfarrerberg is 300 metres long. The child-friendly platter lift is suitable for children and beginners; there is a gentle standard run and a slightly more challenging wave run. Operations depend on the season.

The Liebenau Cross-Country Skiing Centre is the starting point for a network of interconnected trails covering 100 kilometres. The trails wind through snow-covered landscapes and winter forests. The Liebenau Winter Sports Arena also has the Arenaloipe 1.2: a 1.2-kilometre illuminated loop with artificial snowmaking. This lets you choose between the larger trail network and a named loop. Trail grooming and operations depend on the season; check current conditions before your trip.

A Look at the Town’s History

The history of Liebenau Church can also be traced through specific dates: it was built in 1754 and consecrated in 1755. Liebenau became an independent parish in 1756. The two dates relating to the church and the later date relating to the parish refer to different events. They offer another possible focus for your stay alongside the moor, trails and winter sports.
