Explore Waldburg via trails that offer a variety of experiences: from walks with information about local flora and fauna to longer routes through the municipal area. There is also a railway viaduct protected as a historic monument, two parish churches with their own connections to art and local history, and a museum of miniature rural life. You can tailor your stay to whether you mainly want to hike, see historic structures or explore history through specific objects.

Hiking trails with a range of themes

The 6 km Horse-Drawn Railway Viaduct Trail leads from Waldburg through the Kronbach Valley, past BodenmĂĽhle and the horse-drawn railway viaduct. The viaduct over the Kronbach is a structure of historical significance in engineering; it is protected as a historic monument and has remained almost unchanged to this day. Here, the route and a specific structure go hand in hand: the trail passes this protected testament to engineering history.

The 3.3 km MĂĽhlenweg offers a different route. From Waldburg, it passes Teufelstein and descends to MittermĂĽhle, then heads west through the Kronbach Valley to OrtmĂĽhle, an old power station. Teufelstein, MittermĂĽhle and OrtmĂĽhle serve as landmarks along the route, which runs through the valley as far as OrtmĂĽhle.

The 3.7 km Seppenhöhen Trail offers panoramic views from Sternstein across Viehberg to Ötscher. These named landmarks make this a good option if the views are your main focus.

At 1 km, the Spechtweg is the shortest of the trails listed here. This walking trail features signs about local flora and fauna and was designed especially for children. It also has fitness stations and a barefoot trail. If using these facilities is important to your visit, check their current condition in advance.

The 23 km 8 Linden Trail runs through the municipal area of Waldburg. The eight anniversary lime trees along the trail symbolise Waldburg’s eight centuries of history as a former medieval forest-clearing centre. The route thus connects the trail itself with a historical interpretation of the place.

Churches and local history

Waldburg Parish Church is dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. Its three late Gothic winged altarpieces depict scenes from the saint’s life as a penitent. There are also carved side altars dedicated to Saint Lawrence and Saint Wolfgang. The church’s art and dedications offer specific points of interest, without requiring visitors to have a particular focus.

St. Peter’s Parish Church was first mentioned in a document in 1241. It lies around three kilometres west of Freistadt, on a hill at an elevation of about 700 m, and is clearly visible from far away. The two churches offer different perspectives: at Waldburg Parish Church, the altars and dedications take centre stage, while at St. Peter’s the highlights are its early documentary mention and its prominent hilltop location.

Miniagrimundus features more than 100 faithful miniatures depicting rural life in the 19th and 20th centuries. The miniatures on display were made by Johann Hochreiter, a wainwright and agricultural machinery maker from Waldburg. Visitors can focus both on the everyday scenes depicted and on the craftsman who made the miniatures. Miniagrimundus is closed until the end of 2026 due to renovation work at the primary school. If you are planning a visit after that, check its reopening status in advance.
