A loop featuring wooden stairs and a bridge, a view of the Aist Valley and a church with a pilgrimage tradition give Schönau im Mühlkreis a distinctive character for a trip that combines activity and culture. The castle circular trail runs through and around the castle; alongside its religious history, the parish church is also home to a significant work of art. Other options to consider when planning include the Johannesweg regional trail and the winter activities at Stoaninger Alm.

Castle Circular Trail, Castle Museum and Church

The castle circular trail runs through and around the castle. Wooden stairs and a bridge shape the route, while a small viewing platform offers a view of the Aist Valley. This makes the loop a walk around the castle with a specific viewpoint along the way. As a circular trail, it offers a different kind of hiking experience from the Johannesweg, whose 84 kilometres set it apart as a regional route.

The castle museum in the so-called Zehentstöckl opened in 2013 and serves as the starting point for guided castle tours. Those interested in the castle have two different options: the circular trail, with its stairs, bridge and view of the Aist Valley, and the museum, where guided tours begin.

The parish church in Schönau im Mühlkreis is a historic site with a pilgrimage tradition. Its most significant art treasure is a Madonna and Child dating from around 1520. St James's Church has a Romanesque core; the nave was later remodelled in the Gothic style, around 1516, with a net vault. The term describes a vault whose ribs form a net-like pattern. The church thus reveals two distinct building phases: the Romanesque core and the later Gothic remodelling. Together with the Madonna statue, the architecture offers another cultural perspective on the village.

Johannesweg and Stoaninger Alm

The Johannesweg in the Mühlviertler Alm region is 84 kilometres long and has twelve stops. They offer reflections on patience, humour, generosity and helpfulness. The route thus combines a clearly stated total length with thematic inspiration along the way. Stoaninger Alm is right on the Johannesweg and offers a place to stop that may be seasonal. If you would like to plan a stop there, it is advisable to check before your visit.

The toboggan ride on the Speed-Gleit-Bahn at Stoaninger Alm starts at the valley station. A drag lift takes riders about 400 metres to the mountain station, followed by a 600-metre descent. There are also two natural-snow runs with a combined length of about 1.2 kilometres. The distances describe different activities: for the toboggan ride, the lift and descent distances are listed separately, while the roughly 1.2 kilometres refers to both natural-snow runs together. This distinction makes it possible to compare the two options by how their distances are measured without treating them as equivalent.
