The almost completely preserved Gothic city fortifications shape Freistadt’s cultural and historical character. Other highlights include the Mühlviertler Castle Museum, paths in the city moat and hiking options offered by the municipality. This gives you a range of ways to plan your trip, with architectural history and collections alongside the landscape and Freistadt’s beer history.

Towers, gates and medieval architectural history

The largely heritage-protected old town is enclosed by city walls and gates; its Gothic fortifications are almost completely preserved. On a walk around the city, you can see the towers and gates. The Freistadt Tower Circuit offers another option: it focuses on seven towers and two gates and includes a climb up a tower. Check the availability of this experience before your trip.

The Scheiblingturm is one of two round towers built in the 15th century as an addition to the city fortifications. The tower can be visited as part of a guided tour by appointment; confirm the current arrangements in advance. St. Catherine’s Basilica is another architectural highlight: it is Austria’s only five-aisled basilica. Freistadt Castle, which houses the Castle Museum, was built in the 14th century.

Castle Museum: collections and views

The Mühlviertler Castle Museum in Freistadt displays around 21,000 exhibits covering folk culture, crafts and city history across eight centuries. The museum presents its themes on nine floors. The former castle chapel houses Austria’s largest collection of reverse-glass paintings, with more than 500 exhibits.

On the ninth floor, an outdoor walkway runs around the building at a height of about 35 metres. From there, you can enjoy views of the city and the surrounding MĂĽhlviertel hills. Alongside its collections, the museum thus offers a view over Freistadt and the surrounding area.

Trails, gardens and seasonal activities

The revitalised city moat features winding paths and various themed gardens. The Thurytal lies in the Feldaist valley in Freistadt and is both natural and restored. When planning a hike, it is helpful to distinguish the overall offering from an individual route: the municipality of Freistadt has 100 kilometres of hiking trails, while the Medieval Adventure Trail is 25.1 kilometres long. These figures refer to different scales—the municipality’s hiking network as a whole and one named route. Check the conditions for the Adventure Trail separately when planning your trip.

Freistadt’s hiking options also include the Nordwaldkammweg, described as Austria’s oldest long-distance hiking trail. A seasonal alternative at Frauenteich is stand-up paddleboarding and pedal boating, both available from May to September. Check the dates for these activities in advance.

Beer history and beer spiking

The BIER.KULT! TOUR traces Freistadt’s beer history and follows in the footsteps of its breweries and inns. Check the booking details before your trip. To spike beer, an iron rod known as a beer spike is heated to about 600°C and then dipped into beer chilled to 6–7°C for two to three seconds. This caramelises the sugar and causes the foam to rise.

The Alte Schmiede in Freistadt can be visited as part of the “Bierstacheln” (beer-spiking) tour by appointment. Confirm the current arrangements in advance.
