Three hiking trails in Palting overlap at several points and can be combined. There is also nature around Lake Imsee and the Mattig River, as well as historic buildings and traditional crafts. When planning, you can therefore choose between different routes and themes without having to fit every stop into a single tour.

Hiking and Cycling Trails

The Weikertshamer circular trail starts at the GH Kobler car park and passes through Bergham, Heming, Bachlschmiede, Rutzung and Dietersham. It ends at the Beham farm track, with panoramic views, and is about 4 km long. The signposted Mattigrund circular trail starts at the church square, heads towards Lake Imsee through the idyllic Mattig Valley to Mödenham and Dietersham, and then returns to Palting. This route is also about 4 km long.

The Ödwanderweg starts in Mundenham at the GH Fürst car park. It passes the Berndorfer Bach, Stockham, Bachlschmiede, Dietersham and Palting, and is about 6.5 km long. A southern variant leads to the “Traumeck” viewpoint in Hiltenwiesen. The Vitzthum home weaving workshop is on the way there. In terms of distance, there are therefore two routes of about 4 km each and one longer route of about 6.5 km; their starting points and routes also differ.

If you also want to explore cycling routes, Palting has regional cycle routes that connect to the Salzburg cycle network in the lake district and to the cycle routes of the Mattigland municipalities. There is a bathing area by the Mattig River. Regional tourism information also describes the unspoilt Mattig as an excellent place for wild swimming. Check local bathing conditions before swimming.

Lake Imsee and the Landscape

Lake Imsee is a small lake in the “Imsee” nature reserve. It formed in a kettle hole at the eastern edge of the Salzach Glacier from the Ice Age. In addition to its geological origins, the lake is notable for its exceptional variety of rare birds and plants. Visitors interested in landscapes and nature will find two specific points of interest here: how the lake formed and its flora and fauna.

Church, Mill and Traditional Crafts

Palting Parish Church is a single-nave Gothic church with Baroque furnishings and rich early Rococo stucco. It was built in 1325; the early Rococo stucco dates from 1740 and is by Johann Michael Vierthaler. The Marienkapelle contains an Altötting Madonna altar from the workshop of Meinrad Guggenbichler, dated 1717. The different dates help distinguish the building’s history from its furnishings: the church, altar and stucco each have their own historical details.

The Laimhausmühle in the municipality of Palting is also a historic building: it is a very well-preserved mill dating from the 16th century. The Vitzthum home weaving workshop is also part of the area’s craft history. In 1896, Maria and Franz Vitzthum of Mundenham No. 2 learned the weaving trade from a textile specialist from the former Czechoslovakia. The home weaving workshop produced linen, Gradl fabric, towels and red-and-blue checked bedding.

More Things to Do in the Village

The Paulngut in Rutzing offers horse-drawn carriage rides for small and large groups. Check availability before you arrive. The Healthy Community also organises a full-moon walk every month in Palting. The date is announced in advance under Events; check the event listing for your stay.

The playground in Palting features, among other things, a balance bridge, a low ropes course, a slackline and two different climbing towers. These specific facilities give you an overview of what the playground offers without requiring you to plan a longer activity.
