In Eggelsberg, moorland landscapes, lakeside trails and historic religious buildings come together. The Ibmer Moor nature reserve is located in the district of Ibm. If you are planning a trip here, you can focus on nature observation, different walking routes, swimming and cultural history.

Moorland landscapes and wildlife in Ibm

The approximately four-kilometre-long Ibmer Moor Moorland Trail starts in the village of Ibm and leads from the “Moarhaus” to the Seeleiten viewpoint. From there, you can look out over Lake Leithensee, the moor and the Salzburg and Bavarian Limestone Alps. Carnivorous plants such as sundews, butterworts and bladderworts grow in the moor. It is also a habitat for the great bustard, common snipe, corncrake, herons, lapwing and hoopoe. The trail combines a scenic viewpoint with a glimpse of the reserve’s characteristic plant and bird life.

Lake Ibmer is also one of the area’s defining natural features: it is up to seven metres deep and covers about 32 hectares. The information about the lake and the moor describes different aspects of the landscape; it can help you decide whether to focus on nature observation or lakeside trails during your trip.

Choose trails by length and landscape

Two of the trails described are each around four kilometres long, but follow different routes. The moorland trail leads to the Seeleiten viewpoint. The approximately four-kilometre Barfußweg-Seerundweg (Barefoot Lake Circular Trail) passes over different types of ground through lowland moor meadows around Lake Ibmer/Heratingersee. If you want to compare route lengths, the approximately eight-kilometre Eggelsberg Glacier Rim Trail is a longer option: it passes through a landscape formed by melting ice, with erratic boulders and information panels along the way. The distances make it possible to compare the trails’ lengths; their distinct landscapes and destinations offer further points to consider when choosing.

The VIA NOVA also passes through the municipality of Eggelsberg. Six interesting cycle routes through the municipality are available for bike rides. Check the current signage before setting off. This can help you plan according to whether you would rather explore on foot or consider one of the cycle routes, without treating the different route options as interchangeable.

Swimming and relaxing at the Ibm lido

The Ibm lido welcomes families for a swim. Facilities include four piers extending into the water, well-maintained sunbathing lawns, changing cabins, lockable lockers and a children’s playground. As facilities may change seasonally, check current operating information before your visit. This lets you consider a visit as one possible focus of your trip without equating time spent swimming with a hike or cycle ride.

Churches and art history

Eggelsberg’s architectural and art history also offers specific points of interest. The parish church of the Assumption of Mary dates from 1420 to 1436. It is a two-nave Gothic building of the Bürkel type and houses a life-size crucifix created around 1648 by Braunau sculptor Martin Zürn.

In Ibm, the Eggelsberg/Ibm Marian Pilgrimage Trail leads to the “Maria Hilf” chapel. The chapel houses an original statue of Our Lady of Perpetual Help from the 15th century, which comes from the former castle chapel. The church and chapel offer different art-historical themes: the Gothic building and crucifix here, and the older statue, with its origins in a former castle chapel, there. This distinction can help you weigh these sites in your trip planning according to your interest in architecture or religious art.
