Neukirchen an der Enknach offers practical options for planning your trip: the parish church brings together architectural history and art, while signposted hiking trails can be compared by length and destination. For your stay, you can focus on cultural discoveries, a particular hiking route or a winter sports activity.

Church Architecture and Artworks

The parish church of the Assumption of Mary was built in 1430 in the Gothic style by the Burghausen master builder Oswald Bürckel. It is a two-aisled church with a star-ribbed vault and is considered the oldest Marian pilgrimage site in Upper Austria. The register entry dated 23 June 2026 lists the parish church of the Assumption of Mary, the cemetery, the surrounding wall and the portal complex as protected monuments.

A two-aisled floor plan means that a church has two aisles; in a star-ribbed vault, the ribs form a star-shaped pattern. A Gothic statue of “Mary with the Child,” dating from around 1460, can be seen at the right chancel arch, opposite the pulpit. The Sebastian Chapel was built in 1764 in place of an older charnel house; its late Baroque altarpiece depicts the plague saints Sebastian and Roch.

The architectural and artistic history can be read chronologically: Gothic design characterizes the church and the statue of Mary, while the Sebastian Chapel, built in 1764, adds a later period with its late Baroque altarpiece. The Neukirchen Christmas nativity scene is housed in the All Souls’ Chapel and comprises around 180 figures, including fully sculpted and clothed figures. The Neukirchen Nelson organ has a total of 1,128 pipes.

Hiking Trails by Length and Destination

A route description updated on 23 June 2023 lists four hiking trails. Each starts and ends at the village square and is marked with yellow signs and distance information. The blue-marked Panorama Trail is 7 km long and offers views of Neukirchen. One of its attractions is the waterwheel at the Dietzingermühle, also known as the Bäckermühle. The Bäckermühle in Dietzing has largely been preserved in its original condition and is now used to generate electricity.

The red-marked Sandtal Trail is 8.5 km long and leads to the Jäger Chapel. It is 1.5 km longer than the Panorama Trail; in return, the Panorama Trail offers views of Neukirchen and the waterwheel as a destination, while the Sandtal Trail leads to the Jäger Chapel.

Trails, Forest and Winter

The trails in Neukirchen connect the town with cycling routes along the Inn or the Mattig; some run right through the Lachforst forest. The Enknach is a stream about 30 km long that flows into the Inn.

The bicycle charging station is located at the village square. It can charge up to eight batteries at the same time. In winter, a cross-country ski trail adds to Neukirchen’s sports offerings and provides a seasonal alternative to hiking and cycling.
