In Gmünd, different ideas for active days come together: a short mountain bike loop, hiking trails with named destinations, and a circular trail featuring art installations at the Gmünd reservoir. This lets you choose how you want to spend your time outdoors—whether you prefer to ride a bike, head on foot to a snack stop, or combine art and nature.

Mountain biking on a short loop

The Waldspielplatz mountain bike practice trail in Gerlos-Gmünd is a circular route about 600 metres long, ridden counterclockwise. Two hairpin bends, or steep banked turns, come right at the start of the descent. The length, circular layout and direction of travel give the ride a clear structure; the two turns are a distinctive feature of its route.

Another option complements the trail in the Gerlos Adventure Land: since summer 2021, a pump track has been located right next to the Waldspielplatz. The facility may be maintained seasonally. So check the latest information on the pump track’s condition before your visit. This lets you plan around the facility’s actual condition rather than simply assuming it will be available for use.

Hiking to a named destination

The Wimmertal branches off near Gerlos-Gmünd and is suitable for leisurely walkers. Hiking trail No. 6 leads through the valley, past the Eggehtenalm and, after about 45 minutes, to the Wimmertalalm snack stop. This gives the hike a clearly identifiable destination; the Eggehtenalm is another named landmark along the way. The time given is for the route to the Wimmertalalm and is approximate.

The season, route and destination are the main factors to consider when choosing between the hikes: in the Wimmertal, the Eggettenalm and the Wimmertalalm are landmarks. The winter hiking trail into the Schwarzachtal, by contrast, starts at the Gasthof Kühle Rast in Gerlos-Gmünd. It leads through a narrow belt of woodland to the Schwarzachalm snack stop. The starting point, woodland stretch and destination give this winter trail its own distinct sequence. When planning your days, you can choose the hiking option that best matches the season you have in mind.

Art stops at the Gmünd reservoir

The Lebensfreude circular trail offers a different experience from the routes to the snack stops. In 2025, Zillertal artist HAKI created six installations that now form the trail’s stations. The installations invite you to pause at the Gmünd reservoir and immerse yourself in nature. Art is part of the trail experience here: the stations give the route a cultural connection, while the reservoir connects it with nature.

The differences are clear when deciding what suits you: the mountain bike practice trail stands out for its circular layout, length and direction of travel; the Wimmertal trail for its approximate walking time and snack stop destination. The Schwarzachtal trail is a winter hiking route with a woodland stretch, while the Lebensfreude circular trail passes six art installations. These features can help you choose how you want to spend your time in Gmünd.
