Rohrberg can be explored through two distinctive themes: mountain views from the Karspitze and the history of gold mining. There is also the Kraus Promenade as a hiking route, as well as other activities that are specifically located in Zell am Ziller. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these different highlights in mind: the landscape, local history and the activities on offer each give you a different perspective on the area.

The Karspitze and the Mountain Landscape

At 2,263 m, the Karspitze is the last southwestern foothill of the KitzbĂĽhel Alps. Its exposed location above the Gerlos and Zillertal valleys offers magnificent views from the summit of the central and eastern Zillertal Alps, as well as the southeastern Tux Pre-Alps. This places Rohrberg within a wider mountain landscape through a specific viewpoint: in addition to the two valleys, several named mountain ranges are part of the view. If you are choosing a destination with landscape and alpine vistas as your main considerations, the Karspitze is a prominent landmark.

Gold Mining and Local History

Gold mining was carried out by a mining company in Rohrberg from the 16th to the 18th century. It was abandoned in 1838 because it was not profitable. The ore-crushing mill was located in Rohr at the foot of the Rohrberg. As a facility for crushing the ore, it adds another stage of work to the history of mining.

The Gallerhaus was the former administrative building of the mine. Felix Kraus, a chamber singer from Munich, acquired the building and converted it into a villa. The Kraus Promenade is also named after him. In this way, the history of mining is linked to a later architectural transformation and a hike named after Kraus. Together, these details give the local history a timeline: from the operation of the mine to its closure and the conversion of the former administrative building.

Hiking and Other Activities

The Kraus Promenade is a 1.5-hour hike through the forest and alongside the stream. The duration helps you plan this activity for your stay; the forest and stream describe the character of the route. Trail conditions can change, so it is advisable to check them before setting out.

The Zillertal Arena is partly located within the municipality of Rohrberg. Two other attractions are specifically located in Zell am Ziller: the 1,450 m-long Arena Coaster starts right at the valley station of the Rosenalmbahn. Its starting point is in the valley, so you do not need a mountain lift to ride the coaster. The Karspitzbahn is also in Zell am Ziller and goes up to an altitude of 2,100 m. These details describe different aspects: the coaster’s length and starting point, and the altitude reached by the Karspitzbahn. As seasonal operating schedules can change, check before visiting whether the attractions will be operating during your trip.

Four towers at Fichtenschloss can be climbed. This offers a different kind of activity from the hike or the lifts: here, the experience is shaped by the towers that visitors can climb. When choosing what to do, you can therefore distinguish between a hike with a stated duration, a coaster that starts in the valley, a lift with a specified altitude and an attraction with towers.
