Zellbergeben lies on the valley floor and is the seat of the Zellberg municipality; Zellberg comprises the farmsteads on the hillside. Named destinations and activities include chapels, an interactive forest-themed trail, hikes, a via ferrata and classic cross-country skiing. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to give greater weight to culture, the forest theme or a particular type of activity.

Chapels and the Timber Trail

The “Holzweg” (Timber Trail) lets you experience different aspects of the forest at interactive information stations; the trail continues to the Herz-Jesu Chapel. The Timber Trail thus combines a forest theme with a cultural destination on a single route. The Herz-Jesu Chapel was built in 1891 and dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The Josefs Chapel lies halfway along the route to the Herz-Jesu Chapel and offers a beautiful view of Zellbergeben and Zell. The two chapels have different points of interest: the Josefs Chapel is notable for its location and views, while the Herz-Jesu Chapel is notable for its year of construction and dedication. You can distinguish between the chapels according to whether you are more interested in the view or the historical connection.

Trails and choosing an activity

The “Zellberg (with Talbach)” circular hike includes a short section with very steep steps in the area of the Talbach Waterfall. If sections with stairs are important to your choice of route, take this part of the trail into account when planning. The Talbach via ferrata has two very long rope bridges. When choosing, you can compare these specific trail features: steep steps in the waterfall area or rope bridges on the via ferrata.

The Zellbergeben L5 cross-country ski trail is a 2.2 km loop for classic cross-country skiing. Its slight elevation gain also makes it suitable for beginners. This cross-country skiing option complements the walking routes and via ferrata with a different type of activity. The routes mentioned therefore differ not only in their layout, but also in the activity: hiking, via ferrata climbing or classic cross-country skiing.

Regional destinations in the Zillertal

For broader trip planning in the Zillertal, the Zillertal High Road is a regional route option: it is 48 km long and reaches an altitude of 2,020 m. It can be travelled by private car, coach, public bus or bicycle. You can take your choice of transport into account when planning this route.

The Gauderfest, a traditional costume and folk festival, is held every year in Zell am Ziller in the Zillertal. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates when making your plans.
