Fügenberg lies on an east-facing mountain slope in the lower Zillertal, above Fügen. The municipality covers 59 km² and ranges from 600 to 2,000 metres above sea level. Its terrain includes the alluvial fan of the Rischbach, the Finsingtal, the Öxeltal and various mountain slopes. These different elevations provide a setting for hikes and winter trails.

Location and Mountain Landscape

Fügenberg’s highest peaks include Spieljoch, Kellerjoch, Marchkopf and Gilfert. They reach elevations of 2,100 metres to over 2,500 metres. Green alpine meadows, Swiss stone pine forests and larch pines frame the summits, creating a mountain landscape with easy, leisurely hiking options. The scenery includes both forested slopes and higher alpine terrain.

Hikes and Trails Throughout the Year

The network of trails around Hochfügen ranges from short circular routes to more challenging tours. The trails cross alpine meadows, pass through mountain forests and lead to higher alpine terrain, with expansive views of the Zillertal Alps. If you’d like to plan a tour using specific route details, the Kleine Gilfert offers clear information to help you do so.

The moderately difficult “Kleiner Gilfert” mountain tour is 14.4 kilometres long, takes about six hours and includes 925 metres of ascent. It starts at the Hochfügen ski lift car park. The route follows the Finsingbach and passes the Pfundsalm Niederleger. The distance, duration and elevation gain provide a concrete guide for planning your day; its moderate difficulty rating also remains an important part of the tour description.

The winter hiking trail from the lift car park in Hochfügen to Loassattel is described differently: it climbs gently alongside the cross-country ski trail, and the return follows the same route. You can allow about six hours of walking time for the Kleine Gilfert; for the winter hiking trail, plan around the route to Loassattel and the return along the same route. Winter conditions and operations may vary by season.

For ski tourers, the ascent begins in Hochfügen on the valley floor, at almost 1,500 metres above sea level. Two marked ascent tracks are available. Operating rules may change seasonally.

The Pfaffenbichl via ferrata is a summer activity. The approach is on foot only, from Hochfügen via the marked hiking trail to the Waidoffen mountain station. The via ferrata has 115 metres of elevation gain and a maximum difficulty grade of B. This means the approach and the via ferrata details can be considered as two parts of tour planning.

Another mountain tour runs from the Spieljochbahn mountain station to Hochfügen and passes six idyllic alpine huts, some of which are staffed. There is also a small museum at the Gartalm. Mountain bikers can choose Route 411, “Fügen – Kupfnerberg – Finsingtal – Hochfügen”.

Mining History and Viewpoints

The Öxltal show mine, also known as the Spieljoch show mine, is Austria’s highest-altitude show mine. Visitors can learn about 400 years of mining history there. The Knappensteig trail leads from the mountain station to the show mine in about 40 minutes. The mining history offers a different focus from the trails and summit tours in the surrounding area.

Berger Bichl is a viewpoint overlooking the Zillertal mountains, the meadows and fields on the valley floor, and the golf course. It is also a place of quiet. In Hochfügen, St. Michael’s Chapel is one of the sights. Together, the viewpoint, chapel and show mine offer different points of interest if you’d like to include the landscape and mining history in your travel plans alongside a tour.
