St. Pankraz Church and its nativity scene from 1763 give Pankrazberg a cultural and historical character; Venetian glass eyes distinguish the nativity figures. There are also walking and hiking trails, the Berger Bichl viewpoint, and a mountain biking route associated with St. Pankraz and the Finsing Valley. When planning your stay, you can therefore distinguish between local history, scenery, and cycling.

St. Pankraz: Building History and Nativity Scene

The Catholic subsidiary church of St. Pankraz, together with its surrounding wall and the remains of earlier buildings, is protected as a historic monument by ordinance. The present church was built from 1494 to 1497 and extended westward from 1520 to 1522. This makes it possible to distinguish the construction of the present building from its later extension as two stages in its building history.

The Christmas nativity scene by Petrus Schmid of Kleinboden is on permanent display in the church. Schmid lived by the Finsingbach stream; the nativity scene dates from 1763. Its figures have Venetian glass eyes. This material detail adds a craftsmanship dimension to the historical context and also makes the nativity scene interesting to travelers who are less interested in dates than in its design. If you would like to see the nativity scene during a visit, check the church’s opening hours in advance.

Scenery, Trails and Viewpoint

The protected landscape area “Umgebung St. Pankraz” covers 1.80 hectares in Fügenberg. The name refers to a specific, limited area of landscape and offers a different way to explore the character of the area than its church-building history: here, the focus is on protected scenery.

There are walking and hiking trails for enjoying nature in the districts of Fügenberg and Pankrazberg. Berger Bichl is a viewpoint overlooking the Zillertal mountains. This allows you to distinguish between two different interests: trails for walks and hikes on the one hand, and a specifically named viewpoint on the other. When planning your trip, this distinction can help you decide whether you would rather focus on walking or on taking in views of the mountains.

Mountain Biking and Seasonal Hiking Bus

The “Fügen – Kupfnerberg – Finsingtal – Hochfügen” mountain biking route passes St. Pankraz Church and then continues to the entrance of the Finsing Valley. On the return leg, it reaches Pankrazberg before heading back to Fügen.

The hiking bus on route 8333 operates during a set seasonal period: in 2026, it runs from May 23 to October 26 and offers free transport. If you plan to use it for a journey, take the operating period into account and check the timetable in advance.

Almabtrieb and Local Involvement

The Pankrazberg local farmers’ association helps prepare the annual Zillertal Almabtrieb. This brings another cultural connection into focus alongside the building history and nativity scene: the farmers’ association’s involvement in preparing a recurring traditional event. This offers a different way of experiencing time than the nativity scene, which is on display all year round.
