Hochfügen lies at around 1,500 metres in an alpine pasture area, with open views of the Zillertal Alps. The landscape is shaped by its high-altitude mountain setting and cannot be summed up by a single activity. In winter, the ski area, high-altitude cross-country ski trail and toboggan run take centre stage; in summer, the options range from alpine pasture trails and a via ferrata to mountain biking routes. So when choosing a destination, it is worth first considering the season and the kind of activity you are looking for.

Winter: Slopes, Cross-Country Ski Trail and Toboggan Run

Together with Hochzillertal, the Hochfügen ski area offers 94 kilometres of pistes and 37 modern lifts. These infrastructure figures may change. The ski area starts at around 1,500 metres and offers ski-in/ski-out access and short distances within the ski area; seasonal operating conditions may vary.

The high-altitude cross-country ski trail offers another way to enjoy the snow: it runs through the Zillertal Alps at around 1,500 metres and can be used for either classic or skating-style skiing. The toboggan run is 1.5 kilometres long and operates seasonally. This gives you several different ways to get active: downhill skiing in the ski area, cross-country skiing in two styles, and tobogganing on a dedicated run.

Alpine Pasture Trails, Via Ferrata and Multi-Day Routes

The network of trails around Hochfügen crosses alpine pastures, passes through mountain forests and reaches higher alpine elevations. One specific themed route is the “Hochfügen – Life on the Alpine Pasture” trail: hikers collect clues along the route, solve puzzles and follow tracks. The Pfaffenbichl via ferrata offers a different focus. It is around 260 metres long, with 115 metres of elevation gain and a maximum difficulty rating of B, and leads over a 28-metre-long suspension bridge to the summit of the 2,431-metre-high Pfaffenbichl.

For those considering more than individual trails, Hochfügen is also a stop on multi-day routes through the Alps. The four-day Alpine crossing through four countries passes through the area. These routes make Hochfügen part of longer tours, while the themed trail and via ferrata describe specific activities available locally.

Summer Activities on Tyres, with a Bow or by Bike

On the summer tubing run, visitors ride large inflatable tubes downhill along a synthetic track and return to the top by conveyor belt. The archery park is located right by the Holzalm valley station and welcomes both beginners and experienced archers. These two different activities complement the hiking trails: a downhill ride on the track and archery by the valley station.

Several mountain biking routes also lead through the mountain landscape of the Zillertal Alps around Hochfügen. The options mainly include longer tours with substantial elevation gains; they follow forest roads and existing connections. When choosing, you can therefore distinguish between hiking trails through alpine pastures, forests and higher alpine areas, and longer mountain bike tours.

Getting There and Planning Your Stay

A well-signposted, 12-kilometre mountain road leads from Fügen to Hochfügen. It ends at the car park right by the lifts. If you want to reach the ski area by Zillertalbahn, you can get off at Fügen-Hart and take the ski bus from there. Public transport connections may change; check the timetable before travelling.

When planning, it helps to decide on your main focus first: pistes, the high-altitude cross-country ski trail and the seasonal toboggan run in winter, or hiking trails, the via ferrata and mountain biking tours in summer. The options differ not only by season, but also according to whether you are looking for a single activity locally or planning to make Hochfügen a stop on a longer Alpine route.
