Discover Uderns from different perspectives: Plunggen Chapel was built during a plague epidemic, the parish church brings together several datable construction phases, and the Zillertal Cycle Path passes through the village. When choosing your accommodation, it may help to first consider whether you would like to include sacred architectural history, cycling or other activities in your stay.
Chapel History and Architecture
Plunggen Chapel is at the edge of the forest, on the path between Uderns and Ried. It was built in 1438 during a plague epidemic in the Zillertal and is dedicated to Saint Roch, who is regarded as the patron saint against the “Black Death.” The image of Kümmernis from the chapel now hangs beneath the choir gallery of Uderns Parish Church. Thus, the chapel’s dedication and the image’s present location are distinct aspects of its history.
The Roman Catholic parish church stands on the edge of the church village in the municipality of Uderns, in the Schwaz district of Tyrol. It was first mentioned in a document in 1334. The tower with its pointed spire and the two-bay choir date back to the Gothic church built in 1498. The four-bay Baroque nave was constructed from 1685 to 1688; the painted stuccowork and frescoes inside are by Christoph Anton Mayr and date from 1771. The building and its furnishings therefore reflect several clearly distinguishable periods.
Cycle Path, Golf Course and Toboggan Run
The Zillertal Cycle Path passes through Uderns between FĂĽgen and Kaltenbach. The route is easy and family-friendly, has no significant climbs and is mostly paved; only short sections are gravel. If you are paying particular attention to the surface when planning, this mix offers a useful guide: most of the route is paved, but it is not paved all the way.
The Zillertal-Uderns golf course in Uderns has 18 holes and a par of 72. The Kupfnerberg toboggan run is also located within the municipality of Uderns in the Zillertal. The cycle path and golf course offer different kinds of activities: for the cycle path, the route, difficulty and surface are relevant, while the number of holes and par describe the golf course. When making your choice, you can weigh up whether the easy route or the 18-hole course suits you better.
