One stage of the Lechweg leads to Weißenbach Am Lech. Stage 12 passes the gravel pit lake and then continues to Weißenbach. The section from Forchach to Weißenbach is 6.9 kilometres long, is rated easy and takes two hours. There is a Kneipp facility along this section at Weißenbach; its availability may vary.

Hiking between the Lechweg and Gaicht Pass

Stage 13 also has its own starting point: it begins in the centre of Weißenbach and leads to the entrance of the Rotlech Gorge. The details for the two stages can help you choose a hike based on its distance and destination: the length, difficulty level and duration are specified for Stage 12; Stage 13 is defined by its start in the village centre and its destination at the gorge.

Another hiking route is the renovated Gaicht Pass road, which runs through an impressive mountain gorge. Conditions may vary by season. Along the Gaicht Pass route, you can also discover the remains of the fort at Gacht, dating from 1632. Tirol’s longest staircase along this route leads to an iron ore tunnel. The renovated Salt Road at the Old Gacht Pass once served as a connecting route to the Tannheim Valley. In summer, the Old Gacht Pass is used as a mountain biking route.

Moosberg and Lechausee: Landscape and habitats

At Moosberg, dry and wet areas alternate over short distances. The open meadows and pastures at the foot of the slope provide habitat for ground-nesting bird species such as the whinchat and skylark. Sheep, goats and horses keep the pastures open. Moosberg is part of both the Natura 2000 site and the Tiroler Lech nature reserve. Here, landscape features, wildlife and the preservation of open pastureland are closely connected.

Lechausee offers a different landscape feature: riparian forests surround the lake, whose water is described as crystal clear. If you are choosing a destination with nature as your main focus, you will find different highlights here: the habitat at Moosberg and the riparian-forest surroundings of Lechausee.

Church, chapels and the history of craftsmanship

The parish church of St. Sebastian was built in the Baroque style from 1734 to 1738. In 1902, Josef Kärle redesigned its interior in the Nazarene style. The church features ornate altars and ceiling paintings. The seven chapels of Weißenbach Am Lech also reflect the village’s long history. Together, the church and chapels offer a different way to explore local history than the hiking trails and natural landscapes.

The history of craftsmanship includes the Lutz tannery, a family-run tanning business founded in 1923 by Bartholomäus Lutz Sr. The “Millers Miehl” museum offers insights into rural life and traditional craftsmanship. Check the museum’s current access arrangements before planning a visit. Another cultural highlight is the “Zuderer” custom, celebrated during the carnival season; the specific dates vary from year to year.

Cycling, winter activities and seasonal planning

For cyclists, Weißenbach is a hub between the Reutte Nature Park Region, the Lech Valley and the Tannheim Valley. The village is also the destination of a stage of the Lech Cycle Path through the Reutte Nature Park Region. In summer, mountain biking at the Old Gacht Pass is another seasonal highlight. This makes Weißenbach a good fit for a trip focused on cycling.

Other activities are tied to different seasons. The Moosberg lift is a family-friendly ski lift at the foot of Gaicht Pass; its slope is easy and covered with natural snow. A lit toboggan run follows the old Gacht Pass road. The leisure lido has a swimming pool and a non-swimmers’ pool, and access is seasonal. Check the current operating dates for the lift, toboggan run and lido before including them in your plans.

When choosing where to stay, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: hikes along the Lechweg and Gaicht Pass route, nature at Moosberg and Lechausee, or local history and seasonal activities.
