Plansee is in the Reutte district of AuĂźerfern, amid the Ammergau Alps. Water activities, circular hikes and seasonal boat services offer different ways to spend your time here.
Water, Shoreline and Rules
A narrow canal connects Plansee with Lake Heiterwang. In summer, boats operated by the Plansee and Lake Heiterwang boat services regularly run on both lakes. Swimming and surfing are possible at Plansee; water conditions vary by season. Most of the lake is freely accessible to swimmers, while parking in some shoreline areas is subject to seasonal charges. With a water quality rating of Class I, Plansee is one of Tyrol’s cleanest lakes.
A permit is required for diving, which is restricted to three designated sites. Check the current diving regulations before your trip. Plansee is also fishing district 7028. If you wish to fish, check the applicable fishing rules and permit requirements in advance.
Circular Hikes and Winter Trails
The circular hike around Plansee offers two different perspectives: it runs either directly along the lakeshore or around the lake with panoramic views. The route can be shortened by boat at two landing stages. As boat services are seasonal, check the current timetable before planning to take this shortcut.
A wheelchair-accessible hiking trail runs between Plansee and Lake Heiterwang and can be used with full or partial accessibility. Check the current condition of the trail before your visit. For a different seasonal perspective, winter hiking loops circle Plansee, offering a distinct focus for the season.
Boat Services, Circular Bus and Mountain Biking
The passenger boats MS Margarethe and MS Wilhelm operate from late May to mid-October and call at three landing stages in total. They provide a seasonal way to cover individual sections by boat as part of the circular hike. Check the current timetable before your trip.
The Plansee 9624 circular bus runs from 1 May to 29 September on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, between 08:00 and 19:00. Its season starts earlier than the boat service season, but ends in September. Check the dates for the current year before travelling.
Mountain biking routes also offer different destinations: one runs from Plansee via Griesen to Garmisch and back to the starting point via Ehrwald, Lermoos and Reutte. Another route goes via Neuwald-Kuhklause from Plansee to Urisee and is particularly popular with experienced mountain bikers.
Cheese Dairy and Regional Perspective
At the show dairy in Musteralpe, visitors can watch the traditional craft of cheesemaking through a glass window. There is a children’s playground with swings and slides on the lawn at the Sennalpe campsite.
In the wider Tyrol travel region, Achensee provides a point of comparison: at around 6.8 km², it is Tyrol’s largest lake; Plansee is Tyrol’s second largest.
