In Ehenbichl, natural features meet a rich local history. Ecological themes take center stage at Lake Rieden, while the Sintwag offers a walking path with views of the mountain landscape. There are also historic traces along the Lech and winter activities at Waldrast. Which aspect matters most for your stay can be weighed up according to the season and your interests.

Nature at Lake Rieden and the Sintwag

Lake Rieden is in the Rieden district of Ehenbichl and is home to Bilek’s blue damselfly, an extremely rare species of dragonfly. A nature trail runs around the lake and explains its ecological features. Here, a specific example of exceptional wildlife meets a trail that draws attention to the natural environment.

Another distinctive feature becomes apparent in winter: the lake does not freeze over. Underground springs keep the water in constant motion, even though this movement is barely noticeable from above. The open lake and the barely visible movement beneath its surface go hand in hand, explaining its unusual winter character.

A different kind of nature experience takes center stage at the Sintwag. This wooded rocky ridge has a sunny southern slope, and a walking path offers wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. The two places therefore have different focuses: Lake Rieden is about ecological relationships, while the Sintwag is about a trail and views of the mountains.

Traces of local history

Until the bridge at Lechaschau was built in 1464, Ehenbichl was an important and convenient crossing point over the Lech. This historic role on the river offers a different perspective on local history from the religious and artistic landmarks in the village. St. Magnus Chapel was built in 1680 in fulfillment of a vow made during the plague.

A fresco from the first half of the 15th century can be found at Unterried 18. It depicts Saints Christopher and Sebastian beside a body of water, which could represent the Lech. The village square is shaped by stately houses dating from the early 20th century and the well-maintained St. George’s Chapel. The dates thus span the 15th-century fresco, the chapel of 1680 and the houses of the early 20th century.

Walks, connections and excursion options

The walking path at the Sintwag offers views of the mountain landscape. A narrow bridge for pedestrians and cyclists connects Ehenbichl with Höfen. The bridge links two places, while the Sintwag offers a walk along a wooded rocky ridge. These features provide different points of reference for visitors traveling on foot or by bike.

The Ehrenberg Castle World is also accessible from Ehenbichl via a short hike or bike ride. This option differs from the local nature and history attractions: it leads to a named excursion destination and can be considered a short trip on foot or by bike.

Winter activities at Waldrast

The Waldrast lift is a small valley ski lift for families, beginners and ski clubs. Its operating schedule may vary by season, so check the latest operating information before your trip. Waldrast is also a hub for numerous cross-country ski trails and is home to a biathlon club. The cross-country skiing center next to the Waldrast lift has a floodlit, snow-covered trail for cross-country skiers and biathlon beginners.

When planning your winter stay, it is worth distinguishing between these activities: the lift caters to the groups mentioned, while the trail and cross-country skiing center are for cross-country skiing and getting started with biathlon. This makes it easier to choose the focus of your winter stay without treating the different activities as interchangeable.
