The Via Claudia Augusta, a Roman military and trade route, ran through Pfunds; the village also has many old buildings typical of Romansh architecture. Historic structures and varied trails through the landscape offer further themes for a stay, from rural history to bridges, mountain streams and old hay barns.

Architecture and local history

The Pfunds Local History Museum is housed in a farmhouse dating from the 14th century. The museum includes a farmhouse dwelling and three exhibition rooms. The building and exhibition thus combine a historic structure with insights into a rural way of life. The Church of St Peter and St Paul tells a different architectural story: it was completely rebuilt in 1820/21. The museum building therefore dates from a much earlier period than the documented renovation of the church.

The Greiter Sawmill also has a long history: it dates from the 18th century. After its waterwheel broke, the mill had to cease operating. Check its current operating status before visiting. The church and the sawmill thus highlight different aspects: a complete renovation in the early 19th century in one case, and a historic facility whose operating history depended on the condition of its waterwheel in the other.

The Turaloch, the tower on the Inn Bridge, is the village’s landmark. Its foundations are said to have been laid in the 10th century by Duke Welf. This attribution remains a tradition; it is not presented as a verified building history. In 1977, frescoes depicting judges’ coats of arms and sayings were uncovered. Cattle-drive festivals and the Schafschoad in Pfunds are among the village’s long-standing traditions.

Hiking trails and landscape

The Pfundser Tschey offers a different kind of nature experience from the Klamm Trail. The hike through the Tschey passes a collection of old hay barns and cooking huts and is suitable for families and strollers. In spring, numerous crocus blossoms line the trail; in autumn, golden larches do. The two seasons therefore offer different impressions of the landscape: spring flowers and the autumn colours of the larches.

The Klamm Trail starts at the tourist information office in Pfunds and climbs uphill alongside a mountain stream. Numerous wooden bridges line the route to the junction for St Ulrich Chapel. The trail is thus characterised by the stream and bridges, while the Pfundser Tschey is described in terms of hay barns and cooking huts. The origins of St Ulrich Chapel date back to the 15th century.

The Radurschl Gorge features rare ferns and grasses, waterfalls and numerous bridges. The Radurschltal is an unspoilt high valley near Pfunds, home to a continuous Swiss pine forest. Those interested in plant life will also find a distinctive landscape on the trail to St Ulrichskopf: it leads through species-rich mountain scenery with many alpine flowers and medicinal herbs. These descriptions emphasise different features, from the waterfalls and bridges in the gorge to the plants along the trail to St Ulrichskopf.

With a swimming pool, waterslide and paddling pool, the Pfunds outdoor pool adds a seasonal activity to the trails and cultural attractions. Check the opening dates before your visit. The outdoor pool can be enjoyed as a separate activity, while the hikes each bring different landscape features to the fore, depending on your interests.
