The Kirchberg Trail is exclusively for mountain bikers and must not be used as a hiking trail. It connects the Fleckalmbahn mountain station with the existing Gaisberg trail network and is about 10 kilometres long. For hiking, more than 500 kilometres of marked trails are available in Brixental: they lead through valleys and across alpine pastures to scenic peaks at an elevation of 2,450 metres. These represent different scales of getting out and about—a single mountain bike trail and an extensive hiking network.

Elevations and landscapes

Brixen im Thale, Kirchberg in Tirol and Westendorf lie on the sunny plateau of Brixental in the Kitzbühel Alps, at an elevation of around 800 metres. A different elevation applies to Filzalmsee: it lies at 1,300 metres in Hochbrixen, nestled in a natural alpine landscape. Rare animal and plant species can be explored along the panoramic circular trails there. This means that outings take in a range of landscapes—from valleys and alpine pastures to the higher-altitude trails around the lake.

The Alpinolino Waterfall Trail also passes through varied natural surroundings: along the way, you’ll encounter waterfalls, wooden bridges, meadows, forests and a chapel. Those who enjoy walking can therefore look not only to elevation figures but also to the landscape features that shape a route.

Churches, processions and Bergleuchten

The churches offer two different historical reference points. Construction of today’s Brixen deanery church began in 1790, based on plans by Wolfgang Hagenauer and Andreas Hueber. Westendorf’s St. Nicholas Church, by contrast, was first mentioned in official records in 1320. The dates therefore refer to different events: the start of construction in one case, and the first documentary mention in the other.

The Brixental Antlassritt has been held in Brixental for more than 300 years, every year on Corpus Christi, with decorated horses. The procession travels from Brixen along the main road to Kirchberg, as far as the Schwedenkapelle rest area, and back. As the date of Corpus Christi changes each year, the Antlassritt’s date changes accordingly. Temporary road closures may occur during the event.

Another recurring event is Brixental Bergleuchten: every year, more than 50,000 torches illuminate the mountain slopes with various images and motifs. Both traditions take place regularly throughout the year, but their forms differ: the Antlassritt is a procession with decorated horses, while Bergleuchten decorates the slopes with torch-lit images.

More activities and regional specialities

Brixen im Thale and Westendorf provide direct access to SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental. Westendorf is also home to an 18-hole woodland golf course in the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps. Alongside hiking and mountain biking, there are therefore other clearly distinct options: direct access to SkiWelt and a round on a woodland golf course.

At Erber distillery, visitors can learn about the history of the traditional distillery and the production steps involved in its entire product range, as well as sample its products. Visits and tours are subject to the published business information and booking instructions. One regional speciality is Brodakas, available exclusively at the Westendorf dairy.
