A 17-metre-high solar tree, a walk with Roman connections and signposted cycling routes give Gleisdorf several specific points of interest for a stay. There is also a city park, a range of sports activities and a farmers’ market. Depending on whether you want to focus on history, exercise or food, you can choose a different emphasis.
City History and Art
For centuries, the parish church of St. Lawrence was the religious and social centre of Gleisdorf. It is therefore an important point of reference for the city’s history. Three sculptures from the Kunsttrail Region Gleisdorf add another cultural dimension: they date from 2008/09 and are located outdoors at the MiR Museum in Gleisdorf Town Hall, towards Florianiplatz.
The timing is important when planning a museum visit: the museum at Gleisdorf Town Hall closed on 13 June 2026. The collection still exists. Parts of it have been catalogued or digitised, making them available for historical interpretation and to private users. If you plan to view the collection, confirm the access arrangements before your visit.
Solar City, Roman Trail and Energy Trail
The Solar Tree is the landmark of Gleisdorf, the Solar City. It is 17 metres high and weighs 13 tonnes. It generates enough electricity to power all 70 streetlights in Gleisdorf’s city centre. This landmark makes the topic of energy tangible.
The Roman Trail is a walk of about 1.5 hours through Gleisdorf. It is associated with the Roman settlement of Gleisdorf, which covered around 9 hectares. The trail combines exercise with a historical connection in a single visit, without requiring a longer cycling excursion.
The Energy Trail comprises eight stops in the city centre and four more in the districts of Nitscha, Laßnitzthal, Ungerdorf and Labuch. The city-centre section takes about 60 minutes to walk. The four stops in the districts are dedicated to “life energy” and invite visitors to try mindfulness exercises. This gives the district stops a different focus from those in the city centre.
Cycling Routes, City Park and Sports
Signposted cycling and hiking trails run through Gleisdorf. Named cycling routes include the Weinland Steiermark Cycling Tour and the Raab Valley Cycle Path, both of which pass through the city. If you would like to combine your trip with a cycling tour, these names provide specific starting points for further planning.
Gleisdorf City Park covers 1.5 hectares. It contains a Celtic tree circle and the Mobility Park, which has a footprint trail. These add further options in the park to the cycling and hiking trails, including a path marked out by footprints.
For motocross and enduro, EMX Park offers a 7-hectare woodland site with tracks for adults and young people aged 14 and over. There is also a children’s track for children aged 7 and over. Advance registration or a reservation is required for EMX Park; conditions may change. Check the reservation requirements before your visit.
The Gleisdorf Archery Course is a 3D course with 40 targets on an 11-hectare woodland site in the district of Ungerdorf. Individual participants and small groups of fewer than ten people do not need to make a reservation. Reservation conditions may change. Unlike at EMX Park, where a reservation is required, different rules apply here for these group sizes.
Market and Seasonal Produce
The Gleisdorf farmers’ market takes place on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings in the main square. Products include bread, fruit and vegetables, meat products, juices, flowers and pumpkin seed oil. As the schedule may change due to the weather or public holidays, check the current market days and times if you are planning your visit in advance.
Buschenschank Seyfried makes its own spreads as well as house-made and game sausages. Depending on the season, it uses regional products such as vegetables, salad and game. Its seasonal selection offers a different culinary experience from the range at the farmers’ market.
