Fischbach lies on a broad saddle at an altitude of 1,050 m, connecting the Fischbach Forest with the Teufelstein massif. Orchards, trees, paths lined with ash trees, village lime trees and farm gardens shape the character of the area. The Teufelstein is Fischbach’s local mountain: its summit is at an altitude of 1,498 m and offers panoramic views of the surrounding region. Three large, stacked boulders, about 6 m high, stand on the summit.
Hiking at the Teufelstein and to Märchenwiese
Fischbach has a well-signposted network of hiking trails spanning around 60 km. This includes the moderately difficult Teufelstein Loop, which follows the well-known Mariazell Pilgrimage Route to the Teufelstein, a sacred site in Styria. The hike to Märchenwiese is classed as easy and can be extended with a route over the Reithkogel.
The differences are clear when choosing a hike: the easy trail to Märchenwiese can be extended, while the moderately difficult Teufelstein Loop is connected to the Mariazell Pilgrimage Route. This lets you choose between the two hikes based on difficulty and the route described.
Compare mountain biking routes
Mountain biking routes can also be compared by length and starting point. The moderately difficult Fischbacher Alpen Tour is 25 km long and starts either in Fischbach or in Sankt Kathrein am Hauenstein. The Fisch-Biker-Tour is also moderately difficult: it covers 21 km and starts in Fischbach. Both routes can therefore be started in Fischbach; Sankt Kathrein am Hauenstein is also listed as a starting point for the longer tour. The stated lengths differ by four kilometres.
Cross-country skiing and the winter solstice
The Teufelstein hiking and cross-country ski trail is a moderately difficult, snow-reliable cross-country ski trail. It runs for 4.6 km around the Teufelstein, between Fischbach and the Zellerkreuz. There is also a traditional hike to the Teufelstein for the winter solstice. It takes place every year on the Sunday before Christmas Eve; the date for 2026 is 20 December.
Chapel, church and herb farm
Below the village, the Ägydius Chapel was completed in 1777. The oldest bell in the tower of the Parish Church of St. Ägydius is said to have been cast in 1272. The dates refer to different things: the completion of the chapel and the reported casting of the bell.
Veronika’s herb farm in Fischbach offers guided tours of the herb fields, lasting about an hour and a half, which must be arranged by phone. A tasting of the products is included at the end of the tour. A herb workshop is also offered. When planning your day, you can allow for the approximate duration of the tour; it combines a visit to the herb fields with a tasting at the end.
