In historic Hangar No. 8 in Zeltweg, Austrian military aviation history unfolds on a grand scale: the Military Aviation Museum displays more than 25 aircraft across 5,000 m². The collection offers an introduction to a subject that has its place in Murtal alongside mining, town history and the landscape.
Museums of Aviation, Mining and the Hallstatt Period
In Fohnsdorf, the Mining Museum explores the history of mining. Its 1,000 m² of covered exhibition space and 5,000 m² of outdoor grounds feature historical documents and exhibits. Highlights include a 3,600 hp twin double-tandem steam engine and a 47 m-high headframe. For the 2026 season, visits are planned as part of a guided tour lasting about 1.5 hours; advance booking is requested. Please arrange dates in advance.
The Murtal Museum in Judenburg displays finds from the Hallstatt period, including weapons, jewellery and decorated pottery, as well as the Strettweg Cult Wagon. It is housed in a former Minorite monastery, one of Judenburg’s oldest buildings. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the programme includes special exhibitions, workshops and an interactive map of the region. The themes thus range from archaeological objects to a spatial overview of the region.
The Judenburg Town Museum traces the region’s development from the Stone Age to modern times. A panoramic model of the town and a historical collection with 16 dioramas bring this span of time to life. The Puch Museum takes a different focus: it is dedicated to the Puch brand and the people behind its innovations. If you are interested in local technological and industrial history, the museums offer different perspectives on the past and the work of invention.
The traditional Puch Parade is also part of the annual calendar in Judenburg: it takes place every year on 15 August. Check the event dates if you would like to plan your stay around it.
Sternenturm: Tower and Planetarium
The Sternenturm is a 75 m-high, 500-year-old town tower in Judenburg. You can reach the top by glass-floor lift or by climbing 254 steps. The planetarium’s dome shows feature a Zeiss star projector and several video projectors. A high-resolution film is followed by a live explanation of the stars and constellations, combining modern projection with an immediate guide to the night sky. Access options may change; check before your visit.
The Sternenturm is accessible by town bus lines 2 and 3 and RegioBus lines 860, 870 and 871, which stop at Judenburg Hauptplatz. As routes may change, it is worth checking the timetable before travelling. The Murradweg also passes the Sternenturm and runs through the whole of Styria. For cyclists, this provides a direct link between a long-distance cycle route and a cultural destination in Judenburg.
Driving Experiences and Outdoor Routes
At the Red Bull Ring, you can book driving experiences in a Porsche 718 Cayman S, on an official KTM Moto2 bike or in the off-road area. In the warmer months, there is also an 850 m-long outdoor kart track with 9 hp go-karts. The options are quite distinct: choose between experiences in different vehicles and a seasonal kart track. Check the current offerings before basing your plans on them.
In Hohentauern, the cross-country ski trail network covers more than 13 km and has five access points; conditions may vary by season. The Großer Scheibelsee is also located there, at the foot of the Bösenstein. You can reach it via the toll road to the Edelrautehütte, followed by a short hike. Weather and road conditions may affect the route, so take them into account in advance. At 2,448 m, the Großer Bösenstein is the highest peak in Murtal.
Other routes pass through a variety of landscapes: the Nature and History Trail in Fohnsdorf follows forest paths past information boards, rest areas and natural wetlands. From Obdach, an adventure hiking trail leads to the St. Anna viewing platform, with panoramic views across the region. Murtal is also home to quiet floodplain areas along the Mur. Mountain hiking, relaxing by clear lakes, cycling along the Mur and traditional festivals all go hand in hand here—you can choose your focus based on the landscape, activity or culture.
Cycle routes offer their own highlights: the Seckau Alpine Cycle Route R24 leads to Seckau, where Seckau Abbey is highlighted as a worthwhile stop. In Judenburg, the Murradweg passes the Sternenturm. These details give you specific guidance on routes and named destinations without implying that they form a single stage.
Local Food and Drink
For groups, Café and Confectionery Regner offers coffee and cake, gingerbread tastings and a film about how Seckau gingerbread is made, provided you book well in advance. Baking has taken place there since 1660. At the Seckau Abbey distillery, distillery tours and tastings are available by prior arrangement. Both experiences require advance planning, making them particularly suitable if you have a specific food or group visit in mind.
