Hiking and history shape Bretstein as a travel destination. Two hikes offer specific route options; the history of the Mauthausen subcamp and the parish church give the village an additional cultural and historical dimension.
Hiking in the Bretsteingraben
The “Hochschwung from the Bretsteingraben” hike is 14.1 kilometres long and rated moderate. It starts at the Tubay car park in the Bretsteingraben at an altitude of 1,196 metres. The altitude refers to the starting point; the distance refers to the hike. Seasonal trail conditions can vary, so check conditions before setting out. The distance, difficulty rating and named starting point make it easy to assess the route.
The “Kreuzkogel via the Schwabergeralm” hike starts at the Gamperhütte in Bretstein. The starting points provide a common basis for comparison: the Hochschwung hike starts at the Tubay car park, while the Kreuzkogel hike starts at the Gamperhütte. This makes it easy to distinguish between the trailheads; the Hochschwung route also has a specific distance and difficulty rating.
The Tubaysee is a cirque lake with a small summit cross—a distinctive landscape feature alongside the named hiking destinations.
History and cultural heritage
The Bretstein subcamp was one of the satellite camps of Mauthausen concentration camp; it began operating in June 1941. At least 170 prisoners were interned there, mainly Spanish Republicans and German Jehovah’s Witnesses. As a satellite camp, Bretstein was part of the Mauthausen camp system; the minimum number and the groups named as the main ones draw attention to the prisoners held there. The Bretstein subcamp memorial was opened on the former camp site in April 2003. June 1941 marks the start of camp operations, while April 2003 marks the later opening of the memorial.
Bretstein Parish Church is also part of the village’s history. It was designated a church in 1373; its high altar dates from the early 18th century. These two historical reference points belong to different centuries: the first concerns its ecclesiastical status, the second the creation of the altar. For those interested in culture, this span of time brings the church’s long history to life.
A place to rest and local traditions
St. Hubertus Chapel serves as a resting place for hikers, walkers and cyclists. It can therefore be a place to take a break during either a walk or a bike ride.
A Hubertus celebration is traditionally held in Bretstein every year. Ice-stock sport is also mentioned at Gasthaus Schaffer in Bretstein and Gasthof Beren. If either activity is a deciding factor in your stay, check the date of the celebration or the current availability of ice-stock sport in advance.
When looking for a holiday apartment, the reason for your trip may be decisive: for the Hochschwung, distance, difficulty and seasonal conditions should be factored into your plans; if you are travelling for the Hubertus celebration, check the date in advance. This helps you plan your stay around your main reason for visiting.
