Judenburg is situated on a spur of land rising high above the valley floor, at the western end of the extensive Aichfeld-Murboden basin. This location gives the city a distinctive landscape setting. Cultural discoveries range from architecture and archaeological finds to stargazing shows, theatre and regional produce. This offers different ways to experience Judenburg—from a single work of art to a broad view of the landscape.

City History, Art and Archaeology

Architecture and sacred art come together at St. Nicholas Parish Church. The early Baroque pilaster church was built by Domenico Sciassia. The Judenburg Madonna, dated to between 1420 and 1425, is housed in the Marian Chapel. The church thus offers two perspectives on cultural history: its early Baroque architectural style and a Marian image from the early 15th century.

Archaeological history can also be explored on different scales. The Strettweg Cult Wagon was discovered in 1851 in Strettweg near Judenburg. The Museum Murtal takes visitors back to the Hallstatt period, the Early Iron Age between the 8th and 6th centuries BC. It displays finds from the cult wagon tomb, the helmet tomb and BleikolmhĂĽgel. Alongside the permanent exhibition, the museum offers special exhibitions, workshops and an interactive map of the region. Artefacts, workshops and the map offer different ways to explore the region and its history.

The Starry Sky and the Performing Arts

At the Judenburg Planetarium, another perspective turns upward. The shows are followed by a live explanation of the stars and constellations. A Zeiss ZKP4 fibre-optic projector is used to display the starry sky. City buses 2 and 3, as well as RegioBus routes 860, 870 and 871, take you to the Judenburg Hauptplatz stop, from where you can reach the Star Tower. Check the current timetable before travelling, as transport information may change.

Judenburg’s cultural life also encompasses the performing arts. JuThe – Judenburger Theater in der Mauer is an arts and cultural centre in the heart of the city, with an offering that ranges from plays to live music. The genres presented include comedies, dramas, crime stories and musicals, while the programme varies. This provides another way to experience the city, alongside its buildings and exhibitions, through performances and music.

Trails, Landscape and Regional Produce

There are also different ways to explore Judenburg and the Aichfeld outdoors. The hike to Hölzlkogel starts in the centre of Judenburg and follows hiking trails 313A, 313, 43 and 42. The circular hike around Liechtensteinberg offers views of Judenburg and the Aichfeld. The two route descriptions therefore focus on different things: the Hölzlkogel route highlights its starting point and course, while the Liechtensteinberg route focuses on the views. In the Judenburg Trail Area – Sendertrail, the individual sections can be reached via well-signposted access routes and information boards.

In 2026, the Judenburg farmers’ market offers a comprehensive range of regional farm products year-round, sold directly by the producers. The market and the Museum Murtal focus on different things: one showcases regional produce, the other archaeological finds and their sites. The sauna area at the Judenburg leisure pool features two Finnish saunas, a steam cabin, a bio sauna with a Helarium, an infrared heat cabin and a small Kneipp path. Opening hours may change, so check them before your visit.
