Pöllau Am Greim combines mountain tours with its own local traditions. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the different trails on the Greim: they lead through different landscapes and follow distinct routes. A memorial stone and the Faschingrennen carnival tradition also give the area cultural points of interest.

Tours on the Greim: Alpine Pastures, Ridges, and Summit Views

The Greim summit circuit leads from the Greimhütte through Alpine pastureland via AV Trail No. 929 to the summit of the Greim at 2,474 metres. The descent follows the Sandkogel and AV Trail No. 928 to the Schöneben car park, which is also a viewpoint. The circuit therefore covers both the ascent through Alpine pastureland and the descent via a second marked trail.

The Greimhütte is open from May to October and invites you to enjoy a meal. From there, you can take in impressive views of the surrounding mountain landscape. If you plan to stop for refreshments, check the latest opening information before your visit.

The Greim tour follows the steeply rising Greimstraße for 7 kilometres to the Greimhütte. Of this distance, 2 kilometres are on an asphalt road and 5 kilometres on a gravel path. For orientation, the total distance and change in surface go together: the route does not follow the same surface throughout.

The Greim snowshoe tour offers a different perspective. It runs mostly along broad ridges above the tree line and also leads to the summit of the Greim. From there, panoramic views extend across the winter landscape of the Murau district. Parking for this tour is available right by the Greimhütte. Unlike the summit circuit, with its Alpine pastureland and AV trail numbers, this tour focuses on the broad ridges above the tree line and the winter summit views.

The Greimhütten circuit follows a different landscape route: from Hintere Pöllau, it leads across meadows and through forests up to the tree line. The three tour descriptions therefore differ in the sections and landscapes they mention; you can consider which of these aspects matters most for your plans.

Traditions and a Nearby Destination

In August 2022, a memorial stone was erected on public land opposite the chapel in Pöllau am Greim. A floral arrangement is laid there every year on All Saints’ Day. The place of remembrance and the annual date give a visit a different focus from the mountain tours.

The traditional Faschingrennen carnival event is also part of local tradition. A local report from 2025 describes the “bear hunt” on Shrove Monday. The report also notes that this custom is performed every five years and is part of the Faschingrennen. The Faschingrennen in Pöllau Am Greim is associated with UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Another destination in the area is the Eselsberger Almerlebnisweg, which features a humming stone and an Archimedes’ screw at the water playground by the Eselsberger Bach. These specific stops along the trail offer another topic for your travel plans alongside mountain tours and local traditions.
