Arnfels combines late Baroque architecture with scenic views, hiking trails and recurring cultural events. When planning your trip, it is especially helpful to choose your focus: cultural events take place in specific months, while hiking trails and the outdoor swimming pool offer other activities. Arnfels is also located on the South Styrian Wine Road.
Views and architectural history
In the south of Arnfels, on the border with Slovenia, the ridge offers panoramic views of the Bachern Mountains, across Speikkogel to Graz and onward to the wine country. From Arnfels Castle, you can enjoy a view across the entire town and the surrounding natural landscape.
The present-day parish church of “Maria Geburt” was built between 1714 and 1734 and is an important example of late Baroque architecture. The listed statue of St. John of Nepomuk is a Baroque saint’s statue dating from the mid-18th century. The listed Johannesbrücke is also a road bridge featuring a wayside shrine with a statue of St. John of Nepomuk. The connection to Nepomuk links two of these landmarks: he appears both in the statue and in the bridge’s wayside shrine. The “Zur Schnapshöhle - Bauern- & Traktormuseum” displays historic equipment and tools from rural everyday life in a lovingly renovated former farm building.
Hiking trails and landscape
The “Arnfelser Wege – Remschnigg R1” circular trail is 8 kilometres long and takes around two hours. The “Weinwallfahrtsroute Arnfels” covers 25 kilometres and leads via Frauenberg and Eichberg-Trautenburg to Arnfels. At 25 kilometres, it is more than three times as long as the R1—a clear difference in trail length.
Numerous hiking trails around Arnfels cross hills and pass corn and hop fields. Cycling routes add to the range of leisure activities. Eichberg, north of Arnfels, is a hiking destination with well-kept vineyards and fine wines served at Buschenschanken. This gives you a choice between the hilly trails around Arnfels and the wine country near Eichberg.
Cultural events throughout the year
The Arnfelser Schloßspiele stage outdoor performances every July. The hobby artists’ market takes place in Arnfels every September; the Forum A cultural club also regularly organises concerts. The cultural events therefore follow different schedules: the Schloßspiele and the market are tied to July and September respectively, while Forum A regularly organises concerts. If you are travelling for a particular event, check its specific date for your travel year before setting your travel dates.
Outdoor swimming pool and seasonal planning
The Arnfels outdoor swimming pool has a swimming pool and a non-swimmer pool, with a total water surface of more than 900 square metres. Beginner and children’s swimming lessons are offered. As the pool may operate seasonally, check in advance whether the outdoor pool and lessons fit your travel dates. This will help you take this focus into account when choosing when to stay, alongside culture and hiking.
