Oberhaag offers hikes of varying lengths alongside geological discoveries. When planning, it is not just the kilometres that matter, but also the focus of each route: panoramic views, chapels and wayside crosses, information panels about the history of the Earth, or a flat, paved family circular trail. This lets you tailor your choice to the time available and the topics that interest you.
Hiking by time and theme
The border-viewpoint tour is 13 kilometres long and takes four to five hours. Along the way, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Koralpe, Gleinalpe, Schöckl and Riegersburg. The Chapel Trail passes chapels and wayside crosses over 14 kilometres and offers a reflective experience; the walking time is three to four hours. The two routes have different focuses: one centres on panoramic views, while the other has a reflective character.
For a shorter outing, consider the Oberhaag Geological Trail and the village circular trail. The Geological Trail is 5.5 kilometres long, takes about two hours and uses information panels to provide insights into the region’s geological history. The village circular trail is 4.7 kilometres long and takes about an hour and a half. It follows flat, paved paths and is a family hike that is also suitable for pushchairs or balance bikes.
The hiking trails are marked from the Oberhaag municipal office, and there are additional access points along the way. The St. Pongratzen Trail starts in the village centre. At 8.3 kilometres and about three hours, it passes through GoĂźlieschen to the St. Pongratzen viewpoint and continues to the Panoramaschenke Tertinek.
The Altenbach Gorge stretches for about 2.3 kilometres to the exit at the Panoramaschenke Tertinek vlg. Mukonig. Along the way, you climb almost 400 metres in elevation. When assessing this route, it is worth considering the elevation gain as well as the distance.
