Straß in der Steiermark brings together a range of themes for a stay: the Attemsmoor and the Mur floodplains shape its natural side, while the church, castle and museum add historical highlights. There is also a connection to a cycle route, a birdwatching site, Aupark Vogau and guided water tours. These different points of interest offer inspiration for planning a trip to suit your interests, without requiring a set itinerary.

Moorland, Floodplains and Nature Watching

Covering around 15 hectares, the Attemsmoor is the only moor outside the Alps in the Mur Valley. As a protected wetland, it is home to an exceptional variety of wildlife and plant life; a secure moorland path runs through the area. The moor also lies along the Floodplain and Moor Cycle Route. If you are interested in nature and cycling, you can take both into account when planning your trip, without assuming that a particular route runs through the moor.

In the village of Obervogau, there is a freely accessible bird observatory, a site for watching birds in the Mur floodplains. Aupark Vogau is also freely accessible and invites visitors to take walks and enjoy quiet moments. Shaded seating and an idyllic pond are part of its natural design. Access information for both places is available through 2028; check access arrangements before your visit.

Church, Castle and Regional History

Straß Parish Church, also known as the Church of the Assumption of Mary, was built from 1625 to 1628 as the Eggenberg family’s castle church. It is an example of early Baroque religious architecture and is a listed monument. The term “castle church” refers to its original function; describing it as an early Baroque building refers to a different aspect of the structure.

Spielfeld Castle was built between 1580 and 1620 and rebuilt after a fire in 1631. Its features include Renaissance column arcades spanning four floors and a spacious courtyard. The complex provides a setting for cultural events. The castle has no regular public opening hours. If you are planning a visit, check in advance whether a visit is possible.

Regional history is also represented by the Troop Museum in the Archduke Johann Barracks in Straß in der Steiermark. In three rooms, it presents the history of the region and the Austrian Armed Forces. Atelier Roskaric offers an insight into how works of art are created, from the initial idea to the finished object, and into the creative world of Jörg Roskaric. Visits to the studio are by appointment only.

Cycle Route and Activities on the Mur

The Weitersfeld Mur ferry is located directly on the Mur Cycle Route and is the last intact cable ferry on the Mur. If you are planning to take the ferry, check the current timetable in advance. Mur Pur – The Styrian Mur Experience also offers guided canoe and rafting tours through the Mur’s floodplain landscape. As provider details may change, it is advisable to make an up-to-date inquiry before booking.

The natural and cultural attractions appeal to different interests: the moor and bird observatory focus on wetlands and floodplains, while the church, castle and museum put architecture and history centre stage. Tours on the Mur add a guided activity to the mix. When planning your trip, you can adjust the balance of activities to suit your interests and leave time for quieter stretches, rather than trying to fit every stop into a packed itinerary.
