A Romanesque charnel house dating from the 12th century and a castle tour for motorcycles and classic cars offer very different focal points when planning a trip to Oberkurzheim. There are also routes for walking, mountain biking and horse riding, as well as swimming facilities. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether cultural history, activity or time for swimming should be the main focus of your stay.

Cultural history and landscape

The Romanesque charnel house in the churchyard dates from the 12th century. Sauerbrunn Castle was built between 1547 and 1552 by Franz Freiherr von Teuffenbach. Together, the two buildings span a period from the 12th century to the mid-16th century. The ruins of Reifenstein offer a different kind of point of reference: they stand on a hilltop on the northern slope of Falkenberg, about 100 m above the Pölstal. While the charnel house and castle can be placed in context by their construction dates, Reifenstein’s location foregrounds its connection to the landscape.

Hiking and circular routes

The “Ruine Offenburg und Schwarzer Hergott” hike follows Offenburger Straße, passes the “Johannes Kreuz” wayside shrine and continues to Oberkurzheim. As route descriptions may change, check the current route before setting out. The route to Offenburg Castle Ruin continues through Oberkurzheim and on to the ruins. For the Oberkurzheim riding trail, the route description recommends stopping at the ruins to enjoy the view. The Mühltalweg Oberkurzheim is a pleasant, peaceful circular route where you can explore the Pöls natural swimming pond. The circular format is a clear point of reference for the Mühltalweg, while Offenburger Straße and Johannes Kreuz are specific waypoints for the hike. When planning, you can therefore choose based on whether you prefer a circular route or named landmarks.

Routes, horse riding and geocaching

The castle tour is designated for motorcycles and classic cars and passes through Oberkurzheim. The mountain biking route leads to the “Schwarzen Herrgott” summit cross and offers views towards Pöls. The two activities differ clearly in their means of transport and stated destination. Oberkurzheim also has an extensive network of riding trails. Haflingerhof Berr offers riding lessons at its own facility in Pöls, as well as carriage rides there.

The “Weg zum Papier” geocaching trail extends for 5.5 km around the Heinzel Pöls company site and includes eight stations. For those who like to compare activities using specific details, it provides both a route length and a number of stations as useful reference points.

Swimming facilities

The Pöls natural swimming pond has a water surface of 4,700 m² and a separate shallow-water area for children. Both the size of the water surface and the dedicated shallow area are specified. The Pöls indoor swimming pool has an adjoining wellness area with separate saunas for women and men. If swimming is important to you, the options are easy to distinguish: the pond offers a water surface and shallow-water area, while the indoor pool has a wellness area and saunas.
