Those who choose Hohentauern can enjoy their stay in many different ways: on ski slopes and cross-country trails, on marked paths by Lake Großer Scheibelsee, or by exploring themes related to the landscape and history. For planning, it helps to decide on your main focus first. A day on the slopes, a hike and a trail with historical or playful stops offer different experiences that you can choose according to your travel plans.

Skiing and Cross-Country Skiing in Hohentauern

Ski Hohentauern offers 11 kilometres of ski runs across all difficulty levels, from blue to red to black. These include natural-snow runs; the snowmaking system extends from the valley station to the mid-station. If you prefer cross-country skiing, you can access the 14-kilometre Tauern Trail directly from the valley station at Ski Hohentauern. It is designed for both skating and classic style. This gives you a choice of downhill skiing or cross-country skiing as two different types of winter sport. Operations, snow conditions and seasonal access may change; check the latest conditions before making plans.

Hiking Trails at Lake Großer Scheibelsee

Lake Großer Scheibelsee lies in the Rottenmanner Tauern in Styria, at the foot of the Bösenstein in Hohentauern in the Murtal valley. The well-marked hiking trails around the lake lead through dense forests, where you will often see tall Swiss stone pines. You can reach the lake via the toll road to the Edelrautehütte and from there by a short hike. This lets you experience the landscape both through its setting and along the trails. Conditions on the road and trails are relevant for your journey and hike, and may vary.

Themed Trails, Celts and Mining History

The Hohentauern Schauplatzwanderung trail passes ten stations with information panels. Topics range from the history of the village and its inhabitants to the natural landscape. Along the Water Trail, the hike also features various activity stations and a barefoot path. The trail therefore combines historical information with experiences along the water. At Keltenberg, visitors can learn about how the Celts lived in and with nature. The show mine, in turn, recalls Hohentauern’s significant magnesite and graphite mining industry, offering another way to explore the village’s history.

For a playful puzzle challenge, there is the “In the Footsteps of the Celts” Quest Trail. It starts on the terrace of Mountain Adventure Golf and combines an escape game, treasure hunt and puzzle trail. If you would like to include this activity in your plans, check its availability before your trip. The different attractions each offer a distinct focus: information and local history on the Schauplatzwanderung, insights into the Celts at Keltenberg, mining history at the show mine, and puzzle fun on the Quest Trail.

Landscape and Orientation

The Hohentauern Nature Experience Park encompasses a plateau at over 1,000 metres, with mountain pastures, raised bogs and small lakes. The “7 Heavenly Places” feature cloud-viewing benches with views of the surrounding natural landscape and also provide places to relax. These spots complement the hiking and themed trails with further perspectives on the landscape.
