Obdach brings together mountain scenery, winter sports and history in a distinctive mix. To the west, the municipality extends into the Seetal Alps; around the Zirbitz is a hiking area with far-reaching trails and wonderful views from the summit. There are several points of reference to help you plan your trip: a mountain and lake area, a route starting in the town centre, and two cross-country ski trails.

Hiking between Zirbitzkogel and St. Anna

The summit of Zirbitzkogel is at 2,053 m. Below it lies Lake Lavant, the source of the Lavant River. The lake therefore has two geographical connections: its location below the summit and its role as the river’s source. According to route information dated 4 September 2026, the best way to reach Lake Lavant is from Waldheimhütte. The trail passes Maria in der Zirbe, Türkenkreuz and Köhlerhütte. Access depends on the weather; check conditions before setting out.

Another hiking option is the route “From Obdach via the adventure trail to the St. Anna viewing platform.” It starts at the Marian column in the centre of Obdach. The St. Anna viewing platform is in St. Anna am Lavantegg and offers a view. This tour identifies both its starting point in the town centre and its scenic destination. This sets it apart from the route to Lake Lavant, which is accessed via Waldheimhütte.

Cross-country skiing, cycling and ski touring

The St. Wolfgang cross-country ski trail is 3 km long, laid out as a loop, and groomed for both classic and skating techniques. Access points are at the local heritage museum in St. Wolfgang and at Gasthof & Pension Seetalblick. The trail at Hochfeld in Obdach is 2.5 km long and can also be used for classic or skating technique. Its access point is about 100 m before Gasthaus Pauliwirt, by the sports ground. These access-point details are current as of 4 September 2026. The St. Wolfgang trail is 0.5 km longer; both trails offer the same two techniques, and the St. Wolfgang route is a loop. Trail grooming depends on the weather, so check conditions before making firm plans for a day of cross-country skiing.

The Zirbenland Cycle Route R26 runs from Fisching or WeiĂźkirchen to Obdach. Obdach is therefore a destination on this cycle route. The Rieseralm ski area, in turn, is an ideal starting point for numerous ski tours in the Seetal Alps. The two options have different focuses: Obdach is the endpoint of the cycle route, while Rieseralm serves as the starting point for ski tours.

Culture and nature

The parish church of St. Giles in Obdach was first mentioned in a document in 1207. The year marks the church’s first documented mention and provides a specific historical reference point for the town’s history. In Zirbenland, the Granitzenbach is a natural monument. Alongside sporting routes, visitors can therefore choose between a dated cultural landmark and a natural monument.
