From Hasenbach, the Salzach cuts into solid rock for the first time. The stretch to the confluence with the Rauriser Ache is gorge-like in places; rock faces and rapids shape this river landscape. There is also a hiking trail from Högmoos toward Hasenbach and a cycling route that starts in Taxenbach. When planning, it is worth keeping these different starting points and route details distinct.
Timetable and Trails
In the 2026 timetable for route 640, the Taxenbach Hasenbach stop is between Taxenbach Högmoos and Taxenbach-Rauris station. The timetable covers validity periods starting on 14 December 2025. If you plan your journey around it, check the service that applies to your travel date. The stops listed show where Hasenbach falls in the route sequence; the hiking trail and the cycling route described have their own starting points.
On Foot from Högmoos
The Högmoos–Hasenbach trail leads uphill from Högmoos along an old lane to Kleinsonnberg. There, it branches off toward Hasenbach. As the preceding section of stage ET12 of the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail, the trail is also part of a specific stage sequence. The sequence of lane, climb, Kleinsonnberg and turnoff describes this section; it should not be equated with the entire stage. Both the local trail route and its place in ET12 are therefore relevant for planning.
The Salzach, Rock Faces and Gorge
On the Salzach stretch from Hasenbach to the confluence with the Rauriser Ache, the river is gorge-like in places. On both sides, rock faces up to 40 metres high rise above the river; they have not been smoothed by glacial action. The Salzach also forms rapids. These details describe the same stretch of river: rocky banks and fast-flowing water go hand in hand here. At the level of the village of Hasenbach, the Wolfbach also flows into the Salzach within the municipality of Taxenbach.
The Taxenbach Gorge, also known as the Kitzloch Gorge, lies within the municipality of Taxenbach. Walkways and tunnels dating from the 16th century take hikers and walkers through the gorge to an idyllic hermitage. Unlike the trail from Högmoos, the description here focuses on the walkways and tunnels along the gorge route.
Cycling from Taxenbach
The cycling tour to Pension Wiesfleck starts in the centre of Taxenbach. It follows the Tauern Cycle Path upstream along the Salzach toward Gries. Hasenbach is a waypoint on this tour, 2.5 kilometres after the start in Taxenbach; the stated distance may change if the route is revised. The starting points are therefore clearly distinct: the walking trail begins in Högmoos, while the cycling tour starts in the centre of Taxenbach. The direction, starting point and waypoint help distinguish the two descriptions without combining them into a single tour.
A Local Product Connection
An older tourism reference associates Rudolf Gschwandtner in Hasenbach with beekeeping products, honey and candles. If you are interested in this connection and are considering a visit or purchase, check in advance whether this is currently possible.
