At an altitude of 856 metres, Neukirchen am Großvenediger lies in the heart of Hohe Tauern National Park. The Untersulzbach Waterfall, a natural monument, is located in Neukirchen at the entrance to the Untersulzbach Valley. To get there, you can use the “Bahnhof Sulzbachtäler” stop on the Pinzgau Local Railway: from there, a 700-metre footpath leads to the route. This gives you a specific access point to include in your day’s plans for visiting the waterfall.

Winter days on the Wildkogel

The Wildkogel-Arena ski area is accessible from Neukirchen via the Wildkogelbahn cable car. The Wildkogel family ski area in Salzburger Land offers 75 kilometres of groomed pistes. The Wildkogel-Arena also has a floodlit toboggan run more than 14 kilometres long. From Neukirchen, you can reach the start of the run via the Wildkogelbahn and a subsequent ten-minute walk. As the lift operates seasonally, check the timetable for your travel dates if you are planning a winter day around the cable car or toboggan run.

Panoramic trails at altitude

From Neukirchen, the Wildkogelbahn also takes you to the Wildkogel high-altitude hiking area. It lies at an altitude of over 2,000 metres and features family-friendly panoramic trails, mountain huts and numerous viewpoints. The Wildkogel Panorama Trail leads to the summit and offers views of the Hohe Tauern, the Kitzbühel Alps and the Salzach Valley.

Another option is the Venediger Trail in the Obersulzbach Valley. Along the trail, there are numerous play and interactive stations as well as views of the Großvenediger. If you prefer to plan a circular route that takes in the village, the Chapel Trail offers a different perspective: it runs through and around Neukirchen, passing several historic chapels, including Schloss, Hubertus, Krausen, Christophorus and Siggen Chapels.

Waterfall, geology and mining history

The “Blick ins Tauernfenster” geological trail explores the geology of the Hohe Tauern and the history of mining in the Untersulzbach Valley; information panels along the way provide details on both. The trail leads from Gasthof Schütthof in Neukirchen along the Untersulzbach Waterfall to the historic “Hochfeld” National Park show mine. Visits to the show mine are organised seasonally. The trail thus combines geological information with a specific historic destination, while the waterfall also features as a natural monument and a waypoint.

Local history and cultural offerings

Kammerlanderstall in Neukirchen dates back to the 18th century and is home to Tauriska. Readings and concerts are held there; the programme varies. The “cinétheatro” hosts cabaret performances, concerts and band performances, readings, and theatre productions. The two venues therefore represent different cultural formats, without requiring you to plan around a specific event date.

A church document from 1243 is also part of the recorded history of the village. It mentions the establishment of an “Erchtagmesse” by Walter and Jakob of Nuwinkirchen. The year refers to this document and the event it records.

Cycling routes and stage planning

The Hohe Tauern Panorama Bike Trail passes through the national park valleys and includes Neukirchen as a stage destination. The section in Neukirchen highlights the Ober- and Untersulzbach valleys. Another route is the Wildkogel Bike Trail: it runs from Neukirchen via the Gensbichl valley station to the mountain station of the Wildkogelbahn and has a maximum gradient of 13 per cent. Check the route details before setting off. On the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail, you can plan stages in Neukirchen and Bramberg flexibly using the cable cars; these operate seasonally.

Choose a hotel to suit your travel plans

If you are looking for a hotel in Neukirchen am Großvenediger, plan your stay around the activities that matter most to you: winter days on the Wildkogel, high-altitude and valley trails, or culture in the village. For seasonal cable car services and visits to the show mine, check the timetable and visiting dates against your travel dates.
