Thumersbach combines woodland paths and views of Lake Zell with a diverse cultural offering. When choosing a holiday apartment, one question may make all the difference: would you like to spend most of your time on hiking trails and enjoying the landscape, or exploring history, exhibitions and outdoor art? There is also a seasonal lido. The following places and routes offer practical starting points for planning your stay around your own interests.
Hiking between woodland and lake views
The hiking trail network in Thumersbach covers about 70 kilometres. This figure is intended as a guide; the information on trail maintenance refers to the years 2014 to 2019. One specific example is the themed trail “Thumersbacher Höhenpromenade – Guestbook”: it leads through a forest and offers views of Lake Zell. Seven stops focus on notable people who have left their mark on Zell am See-Kaprun. In this way, the trail combines its woodland section and lake views with regional cultural themes. The approximately 70 kilometres describe the trail network as a whole, while the seven stops are part of this particular themed trail.
The stages of the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail are also clearly laid out: the eleventh stage leads to Thumersbach, before the ascent to the Thumersbacher Höhenpromenade begins.
Cultural history and outdoor art
The Lohninghof in the Thumersbach district of Zell is a building almost 1,000 years old. Since reopening in 2002, it has been a fixture of the Pinzgau cultural scene and offers a wide-ranging programme. The permanent exhibition “Dream and Reality” about the Expressionist painter Alfred Kubin is presented at the Lohninghof, Seeuferstraße 6; it is listed in the tourist offering until 31 October 2027. If the exhibition is to be a key part of your visit, check the latest exhibition information in advance.
The Thumersbach branch church is dedicated to Saint Sigismund and was rebuilt in 1684/85. Together with the almost 1,000-year-old Lohninghof, it offers a comparison between different time scales: here, an approximate age; there, a specific period of reconstruction. This gives the cultural history of the village two distinct points of reference in time.
The Thumersbach Sculpture Park offers another form of art. It features seven large-scale sculptures made of stone, wood and metal and has hosted an outdoor exhibition since 2007. Unlike the historic buildings, the focus here is on the combination of large-scale works and different materials.
By Lake Zell and out on the water
Thumersbach Lido is on the eastern shore of Lake Zell and offers direct access to the lake. It operates seasonally, so check the current opening hours before planning a visit. The lido can also be reached by boat from Zell am See. As boat services are seasonal and timetables may change, it is advisable to check the schedule if you are planning to travel by boat that day.
