Enzingerboden provides access to a high-alpine landscape where glacier trails, summit views and the mountain railway ride combine to create a distinctive day-trip experience. The cable car runs via the Grünsee mid-station to the mountain station at the Rudolfshütte by the Weißsee. From there, the two glacier nature trails differ in their destinations and time requirements; shorter hikes and ski tours offer further options. When planning your trip, it is therefore important to consider which high-altitude routes interest you and what time of year you plan to visit.
Mountain railway and altitude
The cable car connects Enzingerboden via the Grünsee mid-station with the mountain station at the Rudolfshütte by the Weißsee. It operates seasonally; check the timetable for your planned travel dates before basing a tour on it. The two glacier nature trails are accessed from Enzingerboden by this cable car. The upper area is a high-alpine hiking and sightseeing region with glaciers and numerous peaks over 3,000 m. The Weißsee Glacier World has more than 40 km of marked hiking trails, reaching elevations of just under 3,000 m. The altitude and alpine surroundings are therefore important to factor into your tour planning; alpine conditions can affect individual trails.
Two glacier nature trails, two time frames
The glacier nature trail on the Sonnblick-Kees starts at the Rudolfshütte and takes about 3.5 hours. The route on the Ödenwinkelkees runs from the Rudolfshütte to the glacier terminus and is listed as taking about 2.5 hours. This allows you to compare two different time requirements: the route on the Ödenwinkelkees is shorter, while the one on the Sonnblick-Kees takes longer. Both lead into a high-alpine environment, where trail conditions are an important factor in planning. The approximate durations help you fit the hike into your day.
Shorter hike and via ferrata
A shorter walking option is the family-friendly Panorama Trail, with information boards leading to the Schafbühel viewpoint; it takes about 30 minutes. This is a significantly shorter time frame than the multi-hour glacier nature trails. A via ferrata can also be reached from the Rudolfshütte in about 30 minutes. Steeper sections are equipped with footholds and clamps, making them accessible to beginners and experienced children alike. These details describe a different kind of mountain experience than the hiking trails. Seasonal snow and operating conditions should be taken into account when planning.
Traces of ice and technology
The former glaciation can also be seen in Enzingerboden itself: the glacial potholes are clearly visible traces of it. The visitor programme for the Weißsee Glacier World for 2026 includes a visit to the ÖBB Power Supply Museum in Enzingerboden, at the cable car valley station. Visitor arrangements are seasonal; check them again before your visit.
The area's technological history includes the Enzingerboden–Tauernmoos–Weißsee works cableway. It was not open to the public, began operating in 1951 and provided year-round access to the power plant structures in the high-alpine terrain until 2023. It should therefore be distinguished from the cable car service used by visitors: its history concerns access to the power plant facilities, not a public sightseeing ride.
Ski touring in winter
Ski tours start at the valley station of the Weißsee Glacier Cable Car in the Stubachtal valley or in Enzingerboden and lead into the Granatspitzgruppe ski touring area. Conditions vary by season. When choosing travel dates, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between the high-alpine hiking trails, the short Panorama Trail and the winter tours, rather than planning them as similar outings. This makes it easier to focus your stay on the activities you actually want to do.
