At Hintersee, lakeside paths, memories of Joseph Mohr and excursion opportunities in the Osterhorn Group come together. When planning, it is worth considering the different highlights: around the lake, the focus is on lakeside areas and information boards; the Joseph Mohr Memorial Trail explores a historical theme; and the mountain scenery ranges from alpine pasture hikes to high-alpine tours. Hintersee therefore offers nature, culture and mountain experiences that can be weighted differently depending on your travel interests.
Hiking Between the Lake and the Mountains
The five-kilometre Hintersee Circular Trail runs along undeveloped, freely accessible lakeshores. Information boards provide details about the local flora and fauna and the history of the lake. Those who would like to explore these topics while hiking will find them right along the route: nature and the lake’s history are equally part of the trail experience.
Another named hiking option is the WaldWasserZauberweg, which consists of the Waldzauber Hintersee and the Wasserwunder Tiefenbach. The Waldzauber Hintersee is a fully signposted circular trail that starts right in Hintersee. The lakeside route is characterised by its shoreline and information boards; for the Waldzauber, the circular route, continuous signage and starting point are the key points of reference. This makes it possible to choose between the two paths based on different features.
The mountains of the Osterhorn Group around Hintersee offer excursions ranging from leisurely alpine pasture hikes to challenging high-alpine tours. This range encompasses very different kinds of activities. Conditions vary depending on the season, which should be taken into account when planning mountain activities.
Joseph Mohr and Cultural Landmarks
Joseph Mohr lived and worked in the municipality of Hintersee from 1827 to 1837. The Joseph Mohr Chapel was built in 2016 as a memorial to him. Inside is a panoramic painting by Hintersee artist Bernd Horak. Other elements of the Joseph Mohr heritage in Hintersee include the parish church, Mohr’s priestly vestments and several original exhibits from his time as a priest.
The Joseph Mohr Memorial Trail passes six additional informative stations dedicated to Joseph Mohr. It is about 1.2 kilometres long, easy to walk and takes around 45 minutes. This gives a clear idea of how much time to allow. By comparison, the Hintersee Circular Trail is considerably longer at five kilometres; the two trails also have different thematic focuses. If you are choosing between a culture-focused walk and a loop around the lake, you can consider both distance and theme.
Winter Activities
During the winter season, a ski route leads from Hintersee to Anzenberghöhe at an elevation of 1,469 metres. It is about three kilometres long and partially groomed; grooming is carried out as needed. The route climbs 716 metres from the valley. Its elevation, length and elevation gain give it a different profile from the lakeside paths and the Joseph Mohr Memorial Trail.
The Faistenau-Hintersee cross-country ski trail is also one of the winter activities on offer. A fee applies; tickets are available from the tourist offices in Faistenau and Hintersee. As ticket arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the current points of sale before setting off.
