Nußdorf Am Haunsberg can be explored through several distinct themes: the architectural history of its churches, a short information trail, nature in the Weitwörther Au and shopping for regional food. The different highlights are useful when planning your visit: the Generations Trail has an approximate walking time, the churches tell of different building phases, and the Nussdorfer Schrona brings the origins of regional products into the picture. You can plan your stay around culture, exercise, nature or shopping for local produce.

Parish Church of St. George: several building phases

The Parish Church of St. George combines a possible origin in the 15th century with a later rebuilding phase. According to a stone inscription in the All Souls Chapel, it may have been built in 1476 or 1491. It is one of the few surviving churches with neo-Gothic furnishings. It was rebuilt in 1913 and 1914. Its construction date, neo-Gothic furnishings and rebuilding thus offer three different points of reference for understanding the history of the building.

St. Pankraz: chapel, church and castle remains

St. Pankraz originated as a castle chapel dedicated to the knight-saint St. Pankraz. From 1701 to 1707, the Salzburg court master builders, under the influence of Fischer von Erlach, constructed the building as a three-apse church with a short nave. The term “three-apse church” refers to three apselike structural elements; the short nave is the longitudinal part of the church building. Together, these terms describe the basic form more precisely than a date alone. On the western side of the Haunsberg spur, ruins of the former castle of the ministerial family von Haunsperg still stand on a steep rocky outcrop. The church and castle remains offer two distinct historical layers of the place.

The pilgrimage site at St. Pankraz also forms part of its historical perspective: it was only of local significance and was cared for by a hermit until 1816. No votive offerings have survived.

Generations Trail – Barefoot Trail

Designed by young people, the Generations Trail – Barefoot Trail presents events from the past and information about Nußdorf Am Haunsberg. It leads walkers to a recreation area designed by the young people themselves. The walk from the first sign to the last takes about ten minutes. This time refers to the stretch between the signs; if you linger at the recreation area or take more time to read the information, you can plan for a longer visit. Unlike the churches, each with its own architectural history, this trail has a short walking time.

Nature in the Weitwörther Au

The Weitwörther Au offers a different nature experience. Its species-rich floodplain forest has been restored through renaturation. The floodplain nature trail follows an accessible route around Lake Ausee and gives families many opportunities to experience nature firsthand. From a dedicated birdwatching hut, you can observe activity on the water and in the air. Each feature offers a different perspective: the floodplain forest highlights the restored landscape, the nature trail provides an accessible loop, and the hut is suited to focused observation.

Regional food from the Nussdorfer Schrona

The Nussdorfer Schrona adds a shopping focus to the cultural and nature themes. It brings together local food producers and makes it easier to shop for regional food. Products made by the Schrona farmers are available; the products on offer at any given time come from within a 5 km radius of Nußdorf. Their origin is therefore a specific point of reference when shopping. The range and availability may change. If you are looking for particular products, it is best to ask about the current selection before visiting. This makes it easy to include the Schrona in your plans if regional food is important to your trip.
