Ellmau offers hikes to various viewpoints, historical traces, and a cross-country ski trail. From Ellmaustein, the view stretches across Fuschl and Lake Fuschl; from Mozartblick, you can see Lake Wolfgang and the Schafberg behind it. The hike to Mozartblick is around 7 km long. This brings together specific routes and views of two different lake landscapes.
Hiking and Views
On the hike to Ellmaustein, you follow a road for 300 metres through the long Ellmau Valley to a small settlement. Just before the houses, the trail branches sharply left towards Ellmaustein. From the viewpoint, you can see Fuschl and Lake Fuschl. This section therefore leads from the valley, past the settlement, to the turn-off towards the viewpoint.
The route to Mozartblick also has distinctive landmarks: after an underpass and a short climb, the trail follows EllmaustraĂźe and then continues straight through the Ellmausiedlung. The hike, around 7 km long, leads to Mozartblick, which offers views of Lake Wolfgang and the Schafberg behind it. The landmarks and approximate distance provide different reference points for planning your hike. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Stages and Other Route Options
For a longer hiking trip, the first stage of the “4 Mountains – 3 Lakes” multi-day hiking trail passes through Unterellmau to Oberellmau. From Oberellmau, it follows Trail 28a towards Sulzberg; the stage also passes over Elferstein and continues to the summit of the Zwölferhorn. As part of a multi-day trail, this type of tour differs from a single hike to a viewpoint.
Another hike runs from Lake Fuschl to Lake Wolfgang and on to St. Gilgen. You can take the bus back to Fuschl. If you plan to use this connection, check the current timetable in advance.
Historical Connections
Near Ellmau stands the RumingmĂĽhle, a watermill built in 1872 that belongs to the Ruminggut estate. Estates also provide a historical connection to the area: the first estates in Ellmau are mentioned in documents, while estates at higher elevations in Ellmau and Brunn are documented. Thus, a named building with a construction date and estates in several places offer distinct historical themes. The RumingmĂĽhle and references to the estates provide different perspectives on local history.
A Seasonal Addition
Another activity is the Ellmau cross-country ski trail, which is considered suitable for beginners because it has only gentle slopes. Its seasonal operation may vary. If you plan to go cross-country skiing, take your travel dates into account and check the conditions for the season. The options differ depending on your priorities: for the ski trail, seasonal operation is relevant; for the hikes, the route, the views, or the fact that they form part of a multi-day stage take centre stage.
