Schliefau offers several distinct points of interest for a trip: hiking trails with a named destination, a short circular route and a historic stock of fruit trees, as well as chapels and local history. The Taborweg follows a residential street to the Tabor, the Tut-Gut-Weg Hochkogelberg is a short circular hiking trail, and the Mostweg is lined with old cider pear trees. There is also a place to stop for refreshments on the Taborweg. These differences can help you organise your interests before choosing a place to stay: hiking, landscape features and history each offer a different focus.

Hiking trails with different highlights

The family-friendly Taborweg follows a residential street to the Tabor. Its specific destination sets it apart from the circular route of the Tut-Gut-Weg Hochkogelberg. Trail conditions can vary seasonally, so check them before setting out. If you prefer a route with a named destination, this is a natural option.

The short circular Tut-Gut-Weg Hochkogelberg runs through lush alpine meadows around the Hochkogelberg. It starts at the PanoramastĂĽberl, and the Sonnleitenkapelle lies along the route. Both the circular layout and the alpine meadows and chapel shape the character of this excursion. Unlike the Taborweg, the focus here is on a loop around the Hochkogelberg rather than a destination at the Tabor.

The Mostweg offers another focus. It is lined with old, gnarled cider pear trees, most of which were planted during the reign of Maria Theresa. Its highest viewpoint is the Mostbrunnen on the Denknöd Höhe. If you would like to combine a hike with a historic landscape feature and a named viewpoint, this is another option. You can compare the trails by destination, circular route, trees and viewpoint.

Local history and places to stop for refreshments

There is a place to stop for refreshments on the Taborweg at the Schliefauhof (EisenstraĂźenwirt). The Schliefauhof is an inn and restaurant in Schliefau near Randegg that welcomes visitors. If you plan to stop here, check before your trip whether the restaurant will be open during your visit.

The Sonnleitenkapelle is a waypoint on the Tut-Gut-Weg. The Dominikuskapelle in Schliefau is a different chapel and is protected as a historic monument under a decree pursuant to Section 3. You will therefore encounter two distinct chapel-related sites: one along a hiking trail and one protected historic building in the village.

Another historical reference is the so-called Schliefaugraben. On 15 April 1945, members of the SS murdered Hungarian Jewish forced labourers there, including 46 children. This local history is a distinct aspect of trip planning alongside Schliefau’s hiking and landscape attractions.

When choosing accommodation for a stay in Schliefau, the different excursion themes can help with planning: a trail with a named destination, a short loop, cider pear trees and a viewpoint, or historical sites. If you plan to stop for refreshments on the Taborweg, check before your trip whether the restaurant is open. For hikes, also bear in mind that trail conditions can vary seasonally.
