The Ottonian Octagon, the wide time span covered by the finds at the Museum of Prehistory and Early History, and trails along the Kleine Erlauf offer different points of interest in Wieselburg. When planning, it helps to consider whether you are looking for architectural and collection history, a walking route with a stated duration, or outdoor activities and water attractions. Schloss Weinzierl is located in Weinzierl near Wieselburg and adds a nearby cultural destination to the area.

Cultural history and Schloss Weinzierl

The Ottonian Octagon in Wieselburg is one of the oldest buildings from the Babenberg era. The Museum of Prehistory and Early History houses finds dating from the Early Neolithic to the end of the Early Middle Ages. This brings a specific building together with a collection spanning a long period of time. In 1966, a Celtic sword around 2,500 years old and a sword scabbard decorated with two dragons were discovered.

Nearby, in Weinzierl near Wieselburg, Schloss Weinzierl adds a late Baroque four-wing complex, which dates essentially from the early 18th century. Further information about the castle garden is available as part of a guided tour; advance registration with the director’s office is required. Bear this condition in mind when planning to visit the castle garden.

Trails and planning your time

The newly redesigned Zwiesel, with places to stop and rest, is the starting point for the Kleine Erlauftal cycle route. From Wieselburg, you can explore 35 kilometres along the Kleine Erlauf. Heading south, the Kleine Erlauftal cycle route offers repeated views of the Mostviertel mountains. Another route is the Lions Club Trail: shared by pedestrians and cyclists, it connects the city forest with the existing cycle path.

The Pfaffenberg loop starts at the new winery building on Zwiesel-Platz. It is about 12 kilometres long, with a walking time of around three hours. For planning, this offers a roughly three-hour hike alongside the option of exploring 35 kilometres along the Kleine Erlauf. If you plan to ride the Kleine Erlauftal cycle route, it is advisable to check the current trail conditions.

Green spaces, activities and water

The activity park on the Erlauf promenade includes an outdoor fitness and bodyweight training area, a bouldering wall, and an open-air classroom with granite blocks. This means there are specific activities to choose from in addition to the routes.

The area around the city forest and the activity park in the Au includes a wildflower meadow, marshland, and groups of trees and shrubs. These are intended to provide recreation for people and habitat for animals.

The Wieselburg bathing complex with Grander water includes a sports pool, a children’s adventure area, a diving pool, a current channel, and an adventure slide. This brings together sports, diving and recreational areas. The bathing complex can therefore be included in your plans as a destination in its own right, alongside the trails and green spaces.
