The Urlingerwarte is a landmark of Scheibbs and a symbol of the views of the surrounding mountains. At 844 metres, Blassenstein is the local mountain of Scheibbs; the classic hike leads to its summit. You can hike to the lookout tower from the town via various routes. This gives you a specific mountain destination and several routes to the lookout tower as different options when planning your hike.
Hiking and Nature Destinations
The 52-kilometre Höhenrundwanderweg (high-altitude circular hiking trail) runs around Scheibbs. The 75-kilometre Via Aqua is another circular route, connecting Scheibbs, Purgstall, Gaming and St. Anton. The routes differ in scope: the Höhenrundwanderweg loops around Scheibbs, while the Via Aqua connects several municipalities. Along the Erlauf and Jeßnitz rivers, Via Aqua features 23 drop-shaped WASSER-WISSEN (water knowledge) stations and scenic rest stops. When planning, you can take both the route lengths and the different layouts into account.
For mountain bikers, there is the Trail.Zone Blassenstein in Burgerhofwald. This skills area is designed for learning and practising mountain biking techniques in a fun way. Use is subject to local rules and operating conditions. This is a different kind of offering from the hiking trails: the focus here is on riding technique and practice, not on a designated circular route.
Another nature destination is the disused tuff quarry in Neustift, a district of Scheibbs. It is designated a natural monument. Allow around two hours for a visit, including walking time, and check the current visiting arrangements and contact options in advance. This makes it possible to plan this destination separately from a hike up Blassenstein or one of the longer routes.
City History and Culture
The history of Scheibbs Castle is linked to the Carthusian Order of Gaming: when Scheibbs passed to the order in 1338, it expanded the castle to serve as an administrative centre for its extensive holdings. Another surviving part of the town’s history is the Pulverturm, the oldest surviving defensive tower in Scheibbs. Exhibitions are held there today. Remains of the town wall can be seen beside the tower, allowing these two visible examples of the historic fortifications to be viewed together.
The SchĂĽtzenscheibenmuseum displays more than 200 exhibits featuring local historical, political and humorous motifs, dating from 1670 to the present day. Concerts are regularly held in the arcaded courtyard of Scheibbs Castle. Exhibitions and concert programmes may change, so check current details and dates before your visit. A museum visit and cultural event thus complement the hiking and nature destinations with a different theme for planning your stay.
Plan Your Journey and Accommodation
Scheibbs is the terminus of the Erlauftalbahn railway and the starting point for six bus routes. For specific travel arrangements, check the timetable for your travel date, as rail and bus networks may change. This information provides an overview of rail and bus services, but does not replace checking for a suitable connection for your own travel times.
If you are planning around several themes, decide what takes priority and what you would like to keep as an alternative. Then compare the location of a specific hotel with your plans and check availability for your travel dates.
