At Lake Lunz, swimming opportunities meet the backdrop of imposing mountains, alongside cycle paths, hiking and climbing routes, and cultural and historical sites. If you are looking for accommodation in Lunz am See, you can start planning your trip around what matters most: time by the water, activity on a route, or a glimpse into the town’s history.

Lake and lakeside stage

The emerald-green Lake Lunz is Lower Austria’s only natural lake and lies at the foot of imposing mountains. At the Lunz lido, you can swim in the lake’s crystal-clear water. The lakeside stage offers another perspective on spending time by the water: during the day, it is open to bathers as a sunbathing island. Hans Kupelwieser designed the lakeside stage in 2004; it was built by the municipality of Lunz. Swimming and stage architecture thus offer two distinct highlights for a visit to the lake.

Cycle paths, hikes and winter sports

For a longer cycling route, consider the 55-kilometre central section of the Ybbstal Cycle Path between Waidhofen an der Ybbs and Lunz am See. It follows the route of the former Ybbstal railway, is completely flat, runs away from road traffic and stays close to the river throughout. The Mostviertel rail bike offers another way to explore the area on rails: it starts at Lunz am See station and follows narrow railway tracks along the Ybbs towards Göstling. After just under five kilometres, you reach the Klein Großau turnaround point. The rail bike operates seasonally from May to October; check the current dates before travelling.

The range of activities in Lunz am See extends from easy walks and challenging mountain hikes to alpine climbing routes. One specific hiking option is the Three Lakes Tour. Its starting point is at the car parks by Lake Lunz, at an altitude of about 750 metres. The Maiszinken ski area has 4.5 kilometres of pistes, with runs of all difficulty levels.

House of the Wilderness and wilderness area

The House of the Wilderness, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Centre, uses its exhibition and modern technology to offer insights into the largest primeval forest in the Alpine arc, in the Dürrenstein-Lassingtal Wilderness Area. Access to the wilderness area itself is subject to clear conditions: it may only be entered as part of guided hikes and along marked trails. The exhibition and wilderness area offer different ways to explore the subject of nature—from learning at the centre to guided hikes in the area.

Amonhaus and local history

The Amonhaus is a manor house dating from the mid-16th century. Master Ofner had it built in the Renaissance style in 1551. The house includes an original smoke kitchen and magnificent rooms, each giving an impression of the varied interior design. Through exhibits, clothing, pictures and documents, the exhibition at the Lunz am See Hammer Lords Museum presents the working and living conditions of the hammer lords, as well as those of farmers, charcoal burners and woodcutters.

The dates also tell different parts of the town’s history: the “Frauenkirche ze Lunz” was first mentioned in 1392, while 1551 is the year the Amonhaus was built. The exhibition and these two historical reference points complement one another as insights into the history of Lunz am See, though they relate to different periods and aspects.

Getting around locally

Free parking is available directly in front of the House of the Wilderness. The centre can be reached by public transport via the Lunz am See Schulen bus stop; the Ybbstal Cycle Path also passes by the building. Every two years, WasserCluster Lunz holds an open day for visitors. The next date will be announced separately, so plan your visit based on the date that is announced.
