The Kneipp Trail in Neunkirchen City Park has 15 stations and is considered the first certified Kneipp trail in Lower Austria. It offers a distinctive experience alongside the city’s historic buildings and cultural program: here, discovery takes place along a trail with several stations. Visitors to Neunkirchen can get to know movement and city history as different sides of the place.

Churches and Buildings Tell the Story of the City

Forty-two listed buildings, including the town hall, shape the townscape in the center. One particularly long historical arc leads to the Roman Catholic Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary, first mentioned in a document in 1094. It was probably fortified in the 16th century and served as a safe refuge for citizens during the Ottoman wars.

The Protestant parish church also tells the story of a different era: it was built in 1862/63 and is one of Austria’s oldest purpose-built Protestant church buildings. The fountain on the main square, erected in 1895, commemorates the completion of the First Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline. Together, the churches and the fountain offer insights into different periods of the city’s history.

Museum and Cultural Program

The Neunkirchen Municipal Museum showcases extensive collections in archaeology, paleontology, folklore, crafts and industry. They cover the development of the district town and its surroundings. The open-air area features experimental archaeological reconstructions, including a Celtic warrior’s grave. Thus, alongside the collections, vivid reconstructions are also a focal point. The individually bookable half-day workshop “Mammoths, Celts, Romans” introduces participants to archaeological work.

The cultural program ranges from the Summer Stage right on the historic main square to concert series and year-round events. Traditional music, pop, rock and evergreens feature on the Summer Stage’s open-air stage. The Neunkirchen Chamber Music Days hold seven concerts each year at various venues, including a children’s concert. The Neunkirchen Cultural Association organizes cabaret and music events throughout the year. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular performance, check the dates for the relevant edition.

Trails, Landscapes and Activities

The Neunkirchen pump track is suitable for mountain bikes, BMX bikes, regular mountain bikes and children’s bikes. It is closed from October until the end of March. Sierningtal-Flatzer Wand Nature Park encompasses limestone pioneer grassland, moist tall-herb communities, nutrient-poor lowland hay meadows, crevice vegetation, ravine forests and stands of Austrian black pine. There are numerous hiking trails and mountain bike routes, and a via ferrata is also among the attractions.

For cycling tours, the Schwarzatal Cycle Path offers two specific figures to help you plan: it is 43 kilometers long and has 150 meters of elevation gain along the route. In the Föhrenwald forest near Sankt Egyden am Steinfeld in the Neunkirchen District, there are extensive cycling and hiking trails. The trails in the Föhrenwald and routes in the nature park offer different landscapes and outdoor activities; the cycle path, in turn, can be assessed by its length and stated elevation gain.

Historic Places in the Neunkirchen District

The listed ruins of Thomasberg Castle in the village of Thomasberg date back to the 12th century. Schloss Strelzhof in Willendorf in the Neunkirchen District also dates back to the 12th century; its grounds include a large landscape park and ponds. The two examples offer different points of interest: the castle ruins here, and the palace with its landscaped grounds there.

Gut Guntrams in the Neunkirchen District covers 3.6 hectares and features traditional orchards, ancient oaks and wild plants. A chapel on the Schwarza River was built in the first half of the 19th century, later moved to the right bank of the Schwarza at the Iron Bridge, and renovated in 2013. Details like these add further historical and landscape perspectives to the city’s history.
