Puchberg am Schneeberg lies in a basin at the foot of the 2,076-metre-high Schneeberg. The town offers several specific options to consider when choosing where to stay: hikes, a trip up the mountain, local scenery and history, as well as activities in Losenheim. First consider whether you would prefer to spend your time walking, taking the railway, or combining mountain and cultural activities.
Hiking and Mountain Scenery
Puchberg has been awarded the Austrian Hiking Quality Seal and is certified as a hiking village. The Schneeberg near Puchberg attracts mountaineers, climbers and hikers; in winter, it is a popular destination for ski tourers. Different ways of experiencing the mountain are therefore at the heart of the town: hiking and mountaineering are part of its character, as are ski tours in winter.
You can visit the Sebastian Waterfall on its own; several hikes can also start from there. It is about a 20-minute walk from the car park on Wasserfallweg. The route description for the Schoberwände leads from the tourist office or Puchberg station along the Naturfreunde circular hiking trail to the waterfall. When planning, you can choose between visiting the waterfall and going on a hike, without treating them as the same activity.
Guided tours in Puchberg take place every Thursday from May to October. The tourist office accepts bookings for guided hikes; you can register at the tourist office by calling 02636/2256 up to two days in advance, by 4 p.m. If you are planning a guided tour, take this registration deadline into account when arranging your trip.
Take the Schneeberg Railway to the High Plateau
The Schneeberg Railway first travelled to the Schneeberg in 1897. The Salamander train reaches Hochschneeberg mountain station at an altitude of 1,800 metres; the Schneeberg High Plateau can be reached from Puchberg by the Schneeberg Railway. The railway offers a different way to include the mountain in your stay than hiking. Check the current timetable before travelling.
You can also travel to Puchberg by train: the connection from Vienna Central Station goes via Wiener Neustadt. Check detailed timetables before your trip. This lets you plan your journey there and a possible trip up the Schneeberg as separate steps, rather than assuming the same times apply to both.
Bike Park and Ski Activities in Losenheim
In the district of Losenheim, the Alpen Bikepark Schneeberg offers mountain bike trails. The Riders Playground includes a pump track, a BAGJUMP® and a children's area. Facilities and operations may change, so check the operator's latest information before visiting.
Ski facilities in Losenheim include the Salamander chairlift, the Salamander drag lift and the children's area. These facilities are presented as family-friendly ski offerings. The bike park and ski facilities appeal to different activity preferences; which one suits your trip depends on what you would like to focus on.
Local History and Regional Cuisine
The Schneeberg Museum covers everyday life, crafts and trades, as well as the history and development of the area. Groups must book in advance for visits outside regular opening hours. St. Vitus Parish Church was originally a Late Gothic building. Earthquakes and fires destroyed it; later additions and extensions changed its appearance.
The listed Schneeberger Säge is another special part of local history: with its Venetian saw gate, it is the region's last sawmill largely preserved in its original condition. The cog railway exhibition is housed in a former ÖBB depot at Puchberg station. Those interested in different aspects of local history can explore topics ranging from crafts and trades to the railway.
The circular trail through the town leads directly from the spa park to the station; the station gallery is on the station's first floor. Visitors can sample Schneebergbuchteln at Baumgartner station on the Schneeberg Railway. Marias LandstĂĽberl serves dishes featuring freshly caught Eisemeersaibling trout from spring water, prepared in various ways. Alongside mountain and cultural activities, there are also specific regional food options to choose from.
