Gasteil can be explored through two distinct periods: the art at Gut Gasteil and the traces of Bronze Age mining in Prigglitz-Gasteil. Chapels and routes add practical landmarks to these cultural themes to help you plan your stay.

Art and Architectural History at Gut Gasteil

Gut Gasteil was built between 1920 and 1924 by Viennese lawyer Dr. Max Silberberg, to plans by architect Hubert Gessner. Its architectural history provides a more recent point of reference alongside the area's much older archaeological traces.

Works by the artist couple Charlotte and Johannes Seidl can be viewed in the gallery and at the open-air exhibition “Art in the Landscape” at Gut Gasteil. The exhibition series is organised every two years and presents changing installations in the outdoor grounds. If you want to see a particular edition, check its dates in advance.

Traces of Bronze Age Mining

Copper was mined and processed in Prigglitz-Gasteil around 3,000 years ago. The mining operation is believed to have been active approximately between 1050 and 780 BC. The story of the mining goes beyond extraction: copper processing was also part of it. Today, the spoil heaps and terraces make this history tangible as visible traces in the landscape.

The Late Bronze Age mining settlement covered about 3 ha; spoil heaps and terrain terraces up to 15 m wide are still visible on the surface today. The measurements refer to different dimensions: about 3 ha for the settlement and up to 15 m in width for the terraces.

Chapels and Landmarks

The Patricius Chapel in Gasteil is a Baroque field chapel and marks an important waypoint on the road from Prigglitz to Gasteil. The Öde Kirche, near Gut Gasteil, lies on the saddle between Prigglitz and Gasteil; its name is also spelled Ehde Kirche or Edtkirche. Visible masonry remains and sculptures by Charlotte and Johannes Seidl bring the site to life.

Hiking and Mountain Biking

Gut Gasteil is easily accessible by car and public transport and lies directly on popular hiking and cycling routes. The “Kapellenrunde” mountain biking circuit continues south from Gasteil to the Kreuzweg Chapel; the Maagraben Cave is also on this route.

The “Prigglitz – Gut Gasteil via Langtal” hiking route is a different option: it starts at the Prigglitz Ort bus stop, follows a partly unmarked farm track to the estate and returns via the Kreuzweg. Trail conditions and waymarking may change, so check the current route information before setting out.

The Pottschacher Hütte is associated with Gasteil as its address. It lies on the Gahns at an elevation of 914 m, on a spur of the Schneeberg, and is used by hikers and mountain bikers. Alongside the cultural destinations at the estate, this offers a named connection to the Gahns.
