Stockerau offers a range of options for a stay: the district museum brings together local and military history, prehistory and early history, and the region’s natural areas. Other highlights include the late Baroque parish church of St. Stephen, the festivals and the protected Stockerau floodplain. Pilgrimage routes and rail connections from Vienna and Retz are also among the topics you can consider when planning your trip.

Museum and cultural history

The Stockerau District Museum is housed in the Belvedereschlössl, a former pleasure palace dating from the 16th century. The setting itself brings together a historic building and a broad range of subjects: the collections cover prehistory and early history, local and military history, and the region’s natural areas. The museum thus offers several perspectives on the past and the landscape, rather than focusing on just one period or subject.

A memorial room is dedicated to the writer Nikolaus Lenau (1815–1850). Regular special exhibitions complement the collections. If you would like to visit the district museum outside its regular opening hours, it is possible to arrange an opening by making an advance request and agreeing on an appointment. Allow time to make arrangements in advance; this special opening is subject to that requirement.

Another striking architectural feature can be found at the parish church of St. Stephen: its late Baroque tower is 88 metres high and the tallest church tower in Lower Austria. The Stockerau Festival provides a different cultural focal point. As one of Austria’s longest-running open-air festivals, it has shaped the cultural life of the Weinviertel’s largest town for more than sixty years. The church, museum and open-air festival thus represent different facets of Stockerau’s cultural life.

Stockerau Floodplain and Activities

The Stockerau floodplain is a nature reserve. Boating is possible there on two named waterways: the Krumpenwasser and the Stockerauer Arm. This specific choice helps you understand Stockerau’s connection to nature and water without conflating the two waterways into a single offering.

The Stockerau Recreation Centre offers another activity option. Its listed facilities include a 70-metre-long water slide, a mini-golf course and a beach volleyball court. The three activities are quite distinct: the slide focuses on water, while mini-golf and beach volleyball offer different ways to spend your leisure time. When planning, you can consider whether you would rather spend time on the slide or at either of the other two facilities.

Pilgrimage Routes and Getting There

Stockerau is part of two described pilgrimage routes, whose details answer different questions. The Weinviertel section of the Romea Strata ends in Stockerau. The fourth stage of the Weinviertel Way of St. James runs from GroĂźruĂźbach to Stockerau. The distinction is that one is the endpoint of a section, while the other is the route of a specific stage. The two routes should not be confused, even though both name Stockerau as their destination.

The train is another way to get there: Stockerau can be reached by rail from both Retz and Vienna. Which connection suits you depends in part on your point of departure. When planning your trip, you can consider your journey and your preferred focus separately: cultural history, nature and water, leisure activities, and pilgrimage routes each offer a different way to experience your stay.

Plan Your Visit to Stockerau Around Your Interests

Those primarily interested in history will find several subject areas at the district museum and an exceptional tower at the parish church. The Stockerau floodplain and the aforementioned boating options are the main attractions for nature lovers. The recreation centre offers a distinct leisure experience with its slide, mini-golf and beach volleyball. The festivals, meanwhile, are part of the town’s cultural identity and should not be equated with its museum or nature offerings. Before your trip, you can decide which of these different sides of Stockerau matters most to you during your stay.
