Hausleiten offers two different perspectives on the landscape: in the south, the municipality extends into the species-rich Danube-Auen; on the southern edge of the Weinviertel, the Wagram rises above the fertile Tullnerfeld. The Wagram is considered the former bank of the prehistoric Danube. Thus, both the floodplains and the rise above the Tullnerfeld shape the setting for a stay. The Danube-Auen are ideal for nature lovers, birdwatchers and those seeking peace and quiet. Depending on your interests, nature watching, trails or cultural history can take centre stage. The “Kultur verbindet” experience trail runs along the Wagram and interactively shares interesting facts about local flora and fauna.

Cultural history at the church and Leeberg

The parish church of St. Agatha in Hausleiten dates back to an early medieval foundation around 900. It is a three-aisled basilica with Romanesque remnants and a Late Gothic barrel vault; the church was remodelled in the Baroque period. “Three-aisled” describes the division of the church interior into three aisles, while a barrel vault is a type of vaulted ceiling. The combination of its early foundation, Romanesque remnants, Late Gothic vault and Baroque remodelling makes St. Agatha an example of several architectural and stylistic periods.

The Leeberg in Pettendorf offers a different perspective on the past: it is a burial mound from the Hallstatt period. While St. Agatha brings together sacred architecture and changes spanning several periods, the Leeberg points to an earlier burial culture. The two sites thus represent different approaches to history: the development of a church building on the one hand, and a tomb from the Hallstatt period on the other.

Choosing trails and routes

Numerous cycling and hiking trails criss-cross the municipality, leading to cultural highlights, historic sites and viewpoints. Two route distances help you compare different options: since 2010, the Weinviertel Way of St. James has passed through the market town for around seven kilometres. The municipality is also home to a cycling route around 20 kilometres long. Both distances are approximate. The type of route and its approximate length are useful points of comparison when choosing where to start: the Way of St. James is a pilgrimage route, while the longer cycling route is an option for a bike tour. The other cycling and hiking trails add destinations related to culture, history and the landscape.

A festival with regional flavour

The Kellergassenfest in der Lehrn takes place every year on the first Sunday after the start of the school year. The focus is on regional wines and food. As the date is linked to the start of the school year, it does not fall on a fixed calendar date. Check the exact date for your travel year if you would like to include the festival in your stay. Its culinary focus offers a different accent from nature watching, routes or architectural history, complementing the diverse themes that Hausleiten represents.
