The Baroque parish church, Michelberg and trails for hiking, pilgrimage and cycling give Niederhollabrunn a range of attractions. The municipality also has traces of history and the hilly landscape of the Weinviertel. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus on local history, a hike or a cycling route.
Church, History and Literature
Niederhollabrunn is one of the oldest settlements and parishes on the left bank of the Danube. The parish was first mentioned in documents in 1135. Its Baroque parish church is dedicated to St Lawrence, the deacon and martyr. The castle-monastery complex at Kirchenplatz 2 is a listed monument.
The town’s literary history is also linked to a specific place: Theodor Kramer was born in Niederhollabrunn on 1 January 1897. The Theodor Kramer Sound Walk begins at a memorial plaque in front of his birthplace and leads through the surrounding landscape. Along the way, texts by Kramer accompany the route. This offers two distinct ways to explore the town: its local history and its literature.
Michelberg, the Way of St James and Walks
At 409 metres, Michelberg is the highest point in the Rohrwald and a popular viewpoint in the market town of Niederhollabrunn. In the village of Haselbach, it lies on the Weinviertel Way of St James. The fourth stage of this route, which is 25.7 kilometres long, also passes over Michelberg near Niederhollabrunn.
The Panorama Trail is another option for hiking and walking in the market town; route details are available on downloadable maps. Leeberg, a Hallstatt-period burial mound, is also located northwest of Niederhollabrunn. These places add historical and scenic points of interest to the church and literary history, without requiring you to combine every theme into a single route.
Cycling Routes with Different Destinations
The Tumulus Cycling Route passes through Niederhollabrunn and is suitable for trekking, gravel and mountain bikes. East of Niederhollabrunn, you can visit a burial mound along this route. Another option is the “Around Kreuzenstein Castle” cycling route, which also passes through Niederhollabrunn. A short detour from the route leads to the drinking fountain by the municipal office.
The two routes can be distinguished by their stated destinations: the Tumulus Cycling Route focuses on burial mounds and the types of bikes mentioned, while the short detour to the fountain is a specific landmark on the route around Kreuzenstein Castle. The Rastplatzl Traubengarten rest stop is located in the “Hollingstein” vineyard in Niederhollabrunn.
Plan Your Journey and Dates
Niederhollabrunn can be reached by public bus from Stockerau. Check the timetable for your planned travel date, as services may change. There is a charging station for electric vehicles by the municipal office; you should confirm its availability before travelling.
An arts and crafts market is held in the municipality every year on 1 May. A harvest festival is also held annually. If you would like to plan your trip around either event, check the current dates for the relevant year.
